Bongo Courtesy Lights Problem After Installing Clock

If anyone can provide any assistance in layman electrical terms it would be much appreciated.

I recently purchased and fitted a VST Digital clock with thermometer off ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181326543835? ... EBIDX%3AIT). This came with an external temperature sensor and cigarette lighter power socket. So I thought what could be easier than to wire this in so that it has permanent power? It had a black and white lead (+ve I assumed) and a solid black lead (-ve), to the lighter plug. So I cut the 12v plug off and stripped back the cabling for my connections....

I found the permanent live (red and blue cable) to the existing roof mounted courtesy lights and connected the black and white lead to this and earthed the solid black cable to the bodywork above the roof liner. Great I thought as the clock was working perfectly......

However when I then refitted the courtesy lights back in position I found a minor problem.

1) With the door closed the driver and passenger buttons do not now switch the respective lights on and they did before
2) With the door open the rotational knob still either allows the lights on or off.............but only if the passenger or driver button is in the on (ie the out position) - can't remember now if it was originally like this

The cabling is a bit of a mess at the moment as the original wires had become so brittle I fitted a small bayonet connection to them when the crimp connections did not work to well. I can tidy this up once i have the wiring sorted. I have checked that there are no other fuses blown which might be influencing things and nothing is amiss. Any ideas please as there are no instructions with the clock for wiring it in permanently? Will try and post a few pics shortly on the following link.....

You have 3 wires on the old plug coming from the ceiling - I3-05 below, far right;
Black - Earth
Blue/Red - +12volts
Red/White - Switched earth
So the black from the display should go to Black, and the Black/White to the Blue/Red.

Hi Geoff - thanks for the prompt reply.........I added another pic to the google drive as I seem to have a black, blue/red and green/red lead.

I assume your advice still applies and that by "display" you mean my clock ( yes with an l - bloody amateur I know!) ?

Which year is your vehicle ?
I suspect the Green/Red will be the switched earth in that case ... probably!
Yes the display is the Clock/whatever else it does
