Rear fan smells when running it on warm or hot - cabin filte

Post by Bong0Boy » Wed Mar 11, 2015 12:50 am

Hi

Im a proud owner of a Bongo 1996 called borris :)

Got a few questions for the gurus out there..

When i put the back heaters on hot and the fan is turned on it smells like an old unused element heater not been turned on for months type of smell - a dusty weird smell .i know its had dogs in as u can still niff it under the air freshener now and then- and i found dog hair where the valet has missed- So is there a way to freshen it up>? is there a filter i can change or something i can do ?
it isn't a motor burning or rubber smell - at least it seems to work fine so doesn't suggest that . it smells like its hardly been used much for years ..

thanks guys!

Hi
If you remove the front heater fan unit under the "bonnet", you can get at the heater/ air conditioner matrices, which will be clogged wit dead bugs etc...be very careful, and remove all the muck. Whilst the fan's off, vacuum the grille in the driver's side behind the driver's seat, but in front of the first bench seat by the floor...take it from me, it'll be full of dog fur...works best if you take the trim panel off, but not always necessary. Replace the front heater fan, and before you get the air scoop back on, start the engine, put the fan on full blast and spray some dettol aerosol or similar in to get rid of the pong, and leave it running while you clip the air scoop back in.
Start the engine next time you use the Bongo a few minutes before you get in to get rid of the residual dettol smell. You may find that before you run the air con. each year that a quick puff of spray in the air intake gets rid of the musty aircon. smell
Cheers
Helen
In the beginning there was nothing , then God said "Let there be Light".....There was still nothing , but ,by crikey, you could see it better.

Cheers!
So do you mean to take the actual fan motor off and hoover behind that ? the smell only seems to be from the top vents in the back - the floor doesn't smell? how can i flush them out , rear above head vents. u can see how much i took apart from my picture below in the link-

THERE IS MORE - i have NO front fan working either i just never mentioned it in the previous post as i hoped to fix today - i searched on here for a fix and did a few things -
I have had the vent cover off and the fan seems to be ok no resistance - seems ok - Will it be a with inside?
checked the drain holes i think i found them and they seem clean -
But - i unearthed some things that may be a miss -

When i took off the front (black) fan unit i saw a wire / plug not clipped(see pic). so i clipped it back in and the fan still doesn't work - was this left unclipped for a reason?
Also i found some cloth stuffed under the coolant hopper that was soaking - couldn't see any immediate leaks but it had been raining ? see pic .

what can i try next for my fans ?

the plug you show is the supply to the front heater fan. try connecting 12v live and a negative to the heater end of the plug, this will tell you if the fan is ok or the problem is the supply.

you can get an aircon bomb to try to remove smells from the heater matrix ----- google em.
