2.5 Diesel Oil Change - Sump Plug Washer

Post by molly » Mon Aug 10, 2015 5:15 pm

Hi Folks

Have all the kit to change the oil on our new Bongo but on reading a few posts, mention has been made of replacing the copper washer. What size is needed please?

In 55 years of doing oil changes I have never used a new sump plug washer. And. Never had a leak.....some are still good after many changes.

Funnily enough, that's what my husband was thinking. Many thanks for that :D

If it's a solid copper washer it should be good for years as long as it's in good condition and not too squished. I think the 'always fit a new washer' mantra comes from the crushable one-use sump plug washers you find on European cars Renault/Peugeot especially. They usually leak if you don't replace them.

As far as I remember most older Japanese vehicles did use a solid washer, although some Toyotas had a fibre or even a plastic washer. So as usual, if it's quality it lasts! :D

There's only so far you can crush a washer and then it will not crush anymore and this is when it could start to leak. Yes I reuse them but copper ones if you heat to red and allow to cool, restores the thingy majigs to normal and you can then reuse them fully as a washer. Hope that makes sense.

Normally 20mm x 14mm x 1.5mm,and it is always worthwhile having one Just in case the original is damaged or has lost its usefulness etc etc .Most garages and motor factors should have them in stock .

Good Luck.
