Techie stuff - Starting problem.

Post by don320 » Sun Oct 25, 2015 1:28 pm

Hi everyone I tried starting my bongo a week ago it just kept turning over without bursting into life as normal it was working fine the day before if it had been a petrol engine I would have said there was no spark. I have checked the little mesh filter at the pump it's clean plenty fuel in the fuel filter removed glow plugs tested with a wire from + on a battery and earthed the plug it did not heat up so I replaced the 4 glow plugs and it still wont start I checked the wire going to the plug rail with my meter it only showed .023 v I don't know what it should read if it is 12 v or what the only other thing I can think of is the fuse wire at the battery or the relay which I understand to be a bit expensive I also removed 2 of the fuel pipes going to the injectors to see if there was fuel getting through there was fuel there ok can someone please give me an idea as what can be wrong with it. thanks

I would expect 12v at the glow plugs, are you testing them when the glow plug light is on?

Diesels don't tend to need much - fuel and compression is about it.

I don't have much Bongo specific experience as touch wood the Bongo hasn't had any problems yet!

I had a similar problem on a Discovery though - that turned out to be the stop solenoid which cuts off the fuel. The solenoid had failed so wouldn't open so no fuel flowed. Temporary fix was to remove the solenoid and take out the plunger.

If you glow plugs really aren't getting 12v then it could be the relay that has died. Can you hear the click? Turn the ignition on. Wait for the glow plug light to go out then carry on waiting and listening a short while later you should hear the click of the relay as they stop operating.

Have you tried it later in the day when it is a bit warmer? - Might not need the glow plugs by that point in the day.

Alternatively you could possibly remove the glow pug rail and connect 12v directly to warm the glow plugs and try starting to prove if it is them.

I'm sure some others will be along soon with some suggestions

Sounds like the fusible link might have blown if it worked when bypassed ?
The link feeds the relay from the battery terminal arm;

I have to press a button in in order to get the light on showing the plugs are heating I had press the button with the ignition on in order to get a reading

Sounds strange - is that an aftermarket addition (the button to press to put the glow plugs on)?

Maybe someone has had problems in the past.

I think what g8hde meant by bypassed is that you were able to test 12v directly (and I take it they worked then).

So if bypassing works then it may well be that fuseable link that supplies the relay with power. If the wiring has been modified though it could be somewhere else.

Some Peeps fitted a push button switch between the Glow plug feed rail and the relay thinking (hoping) this would prolong the life of the plugs.

its always been fitted, it sounds like yours has been modified in the past.

look on the glow plug connecting rail, its plastic coated. there is the nut connection that supplies the live feed, measure here with a multimeter when trying to start it. if nothing put a jump lead, 12v, for a min then try to start it up, this will tell you if its a supply fault.
