Auto problem

Post by seger » Wed Mar 23, 2016 8:32 pm

Hi. My Bongo has a fault with the auto trans. When setting off she drives in 1st gear, then second but when going into 3rd there is no drive just rising revs. I had solenoid problems before and had it fixed. Can anyone give me any advice please ? I've had her 11 years and always had her serviced.
Thanks, Bill

Further to the above. The day before the fault the battery was flat. ( son in law has the van in Wales ) The battery is recent and a new alternator too. He thinks an interior light was left on. Coincidence ?
Yours in anticipation.

Check the oil for colour & smell, if it smells burnt then the high gear clutch has failed & you are into a rebuild or a replacement 2nd hand unit (with all the risks it carries). The two common (& it isn't that common) reasons for the Bongo transmissions to fail are for high clutch failure & planetary breakage, its sounds like it may be the former here.

DON'T bother changing the oil to fix this as you will just be wasting your time & money. Oil changes are preventative only, like your engine.

Thank you alacrity. Am in Wales now to transport the family home to Sheffield. Bongo to be recovered. Will take her to auto man on Monday. Had her 10 years now. Had two transmission repairs in that time. Have to see if it's worth the expense. Many thanks. Bill
