My Bongo is too big!

Post by Runningdog69 » Fri Jul 15, 2016 10:46 am

Borrowed a Bongo to check it fits in the garage but alas it is just a little too tall :-(

I tried letting air out of the tyres but still a little too tall so was wondering about lowering options I could fit lower profile tyres but I don't think this will lower it enough and I don't want to affect the gearing too much are lowering springs available (where from/cost) and if so what height difference can I expect to achieve (I only need to gain a couple of inches) how will this affect ride quality anyone any experience?

Personaly I wouldn't lower it.

Bongos are already have fairly limited ground clearance plus your insurers will need to know of the mod.

Ours lives outside for the same reason.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

Jack up the garage, don't forget to put axle stands under it.

Never even attempted to put ours in. Someone else I know had a similar problem (not with a bongo but a caravan) and ended up changing the garage door. The hole was big enough but the up and over door got in the way - they switched to two doors which opened to the sides out onto the drive.

No idea what kind of garage door you have but would it be an option?

Yep we have neighbours with Sotal's solution. They just modified the up and over door though, so that it hinges from the side. They now fit their VW in.

Also, you say you borrowed one. If you haven't bought it and you can get away without the AFT the tintops are bit smaller.

And on that note, if it isn't much extra clearance you need, I believe that some of the aftermarket roofs are lower so a tintop fitted with an aftermarket roof tent may fit.
