Having heard a lot about Bongos rusting from the inside and with the colder weather on its way I have decided to try for some preventative maintenance. My aim is to try and remove one of the rear panels as a test and apply some rustproofing to the bodywork. Having read some other posts I have armed myself with a spray bottle of Fertan and I also have a spray can of Dinitrol and a tin of Waxoyl (not sure which way to go there). So am I right in thinking that after removing the panel the plan of attack would be to rub down any surface rust I can find and spray all of the exposed metalwork with Fetan and let it dry. Once dry I give that a good wash down with water and then coat the lot with either Dinitrol or Waxoyl? I don't have a compressor so will be reliant on either a spray can or a brush. Any thing else I need to be aware of?

I found waxoyl spray can very limited in its ability to spray/mist effectively into in accessible areas.

I think i'd be just as happy with plain waxoyl as dinitrol in abrasion/road spray proof areas except perhaps where solar heat might melt waxoyl more than dinitrol.

I think that where an area is accessible, rollering or brushing is good. But where it is inaccessible, you will need a good pressure spray of some sort. Interested to hear what others think about all this.

Hmm thanks Mike. Guess I'll hold off until I get more info. Not much point starting the job if I won't be able to reach important areas.

in the past i've used a garden spray with waxoil / waxoyl. the nozzle/ on off switch can get clogged, douse in hot/boiling water. keep tin of waxoil in hot water. diluting with 20% white spirit will get a finer spray for cavities. ps stinks.
don't allow it to drip onto tarmac, it dessolves the bitumen and makes a right old mess.
now get out there.

That sounds good. At a guess i'd budget to be throwing the pressure sprayer away afterwards? Oh and wear disposable overalls too! :mrgreen:

yes sprayer not suitable for anything else again. a good clean (white spirit) as soon as may make it suitable for same job again.
2 pairs of disposable if cheap variety, disposable head wear and safety specs, also may end up being disposed of. protect areas not to be sprayed (eg brakes, )with paper masking tape etc nice big polythene sheet or ground sheet for floor especialy if tarmac.

You are right on the application order .
You can leave the Fertan unprotected for up to a year before the coating fails.
I have some Fertan in a Killaspray and no problem with seals as yet. Not sure on the waxoyl though.
A push bike pump and flexy bit is useful for shooting heavier waxes and stuff up chassis leg and the like more forceful than a Killaspray.
