New shape bongo, rear fog lights

Post by Roy748 » Tue Jun 06, 2017 6:10 pm

Hello.
Sorry if this has been asked before but has anyone wired in the large redundant rear lights across the tail gate on the new shape bongo as their fog lights.
The previous owner of my bongo wired the off side reversIng light as their fog light with a switch on the dash. Well I assume they did.. it does not work mind. There are 2 new wires running to the reversing bulb and a disconnected but unidentified switch on the dash next to the front fog light switch, they also covered the light lens with red tape. Surprised this passed the MOT.
I was thinking of using the unidentified switch to feed power to the rear unused lights and reconnecting the off side reversing light back up.
Any advice would be appreciated

The top red ones are side lights, the bottom ones don't even have a hole in the reflector bowl, they're just dummy ones.
I've not measured the height but a fog light needs to be within 1m of the ground.

Thanks for your comments. I think having now rewired the switch and discovered the previous owner had utilised one of the reversing lights. I will continue with this set up. Just need to buy a red bulb rather than have red tape over the lens.

The rear reflectors as you say do not have bulbs. Sadly one of mine is rather dark after having a build up of water in it over a period of time (drain hole blocked) today I removed it from the van (the entire light cluster ) in the hope of cleaning it. But unfortunately it's a sealed unit and cannot be stripped for cleaning.

I did discover using a 19mm spanner pushed over the 4 plastic clips which need their sides pinched together in order to release them worked well. Hopefully that will help others should they remove the light cluster.

Sounds like the best and cheapest option, and will look clean, too. 8)

This is my fog light. It's a really bright little LED mounted in the reflector at the bottom. Just a thought if you want to retain the reversing light.

Hello. I like this idea. Did you have any problems with the MOT?

Where did you get the red LED?

None at all, I used the local council MOT and the guy even went as far to say it's a neat solution to adding a fog light.
Second MOT with it fitted.

Today I fitted a red bulb into the original reversing light only it's not very bright although the general view is it will be fine for the MOT. But I do prefer your option and the idea of restoring the reversing light. Where did you buy the LED and holder etc

The LED was fitted on import for the MOT, not by me I'm afraid.

These look similar though

Sort of thing that will have many uses, thanks.

And dead cheap, too. :D
