Post by 1307EYRE » Thu Dec 12, 2019 10:02 pm

hi I have just fitted an AFT roof to my tintop.I have purchased the wiring diagram from bongo fury but as its all in japanese and colours are not shown i am not finding it very useful to be hones. Can anyone help me of how to wire up the AFT from a tintop chassis. I have all the wiring and AFT ECU from the donor AFT roof.If not could anyone :( recommend a garage that could do it for me .I am based in Southampton

Won't you need to re-enforce the tintop roof ? Construction isn't the same for the two types of roof, refer to the parts manuals for the details http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsmk2/

Do you have ALL the wiring looms for the roof including the ones to the cabin roof switch and possibly the one to the sound warning system, a certain that won't be the same between the the two different chassis types.

The semi- translated diagrams are on-line here, if your using Chrome then you will need to install and enable Flash for the site;

they include the computer module for the AFT as well.

I believe STUC did this recently, but he cut off the old Tintop roof and transplanted a complete AFT roof metal from the pillars upwards.

HI Geoff Yes I have put an AFT roof on my tintop.I kept the original tintop roof frame but added the AFT roof skin and all the strengthening brackets plus I added some additional strengthening bars as my calculations show that the original AFT could cause issues in torsion when sleeping in the AFT.I joined the roof at the gutter line using a bonding adhesive and mechanical/welding to fit the 2 different roof profiles.I have all the wiring from an AFT roof bongo and my original tintop bongo including AFT module I am currently servicing the 2 AFT motors as one was quite badly corroded and needed some tlc. to get it to work well .The problem I have is wiring the AFT loom into the tintop loom. I purchased the cd from bongo fury with the 4 different wiring diagrams but as most of this is still in Japanese and the colour of the wires are not shown its a bit difficult to work out.I also have the bongo handbook and the NZ workshop manual but still find it a bit difficult even though I am an Engineer.I wondered if anyone has done ths before and how they managed it I was intending to do away with some of the switches like handbrake,etc and just keep it simple with a raise/lower switch and lock switch I have seen AFT roofs on other makes of vans so it must be possible just thought I would see if anyone could helnks Adrian

I've certainly heard of Bongo AFTs being fitted to Vee Dubs, and it must be easier to add to a tin top, but sadly I don't have any techie info on this.

Don't forget your insurers will need to know about the modification. :wink:

I would be wary of removing any of the safety features! I have driven off on more than one occasion with the roof up only to hear the beeping and realise that I had forgotten the roof, hence by-passing the handbrake switch and the feed into the SWS is not to be taken lightly! Likewise the limit switches on the AFT movement, especially the lowering ones that ensure that the sliders have entered into the capture/holding case at the front which prevents the roof lifting should air get under the front of the AFT at speed!

There is a Bongo chap in the NW that may be able to help as he undertakes AFT transplants, he has done quite a few and the cost is roughly the same as an aftermarket pop top conversion....cannot remember the name of the outfit though.
