Prospective purchase

Post by kton2002 » Thu May 11, 2023 7:58 pm

Been to see a bongo, a few pics attached. Not sure if it’s. A good one or not, appears solid underneath and no advisories for rusty bits underneath , just a general surface corrosion one. Tail gate rusted at bottom in one area and wheel arches starting to show as per pics. 100k miles, 2005 model, converted. Any thoughts appreciated. £8.6k. Temperature dial didn’t rise at all until the last few mins of the journey (10 mins or so) and then it went back down having raised a little bit.

Not a lot of info to go on ?
Which engine?
Is it a Tintop or AFT ?
Is it converted side / rear ??
The paint factory burnt down in 2004 so any vehicles after that date were manufactured before then but stored before being registered in Japan.

Manual pop top, 2.0 petrol, converted at the side with seats that are the originals that have been cut to size to still fit. Front row is a swivel setup.

As you say a lot of surface rust, was it undersealed when imported ? If not then that's is not a good sign at all, in Japan they don't use salt on the roads so didn't need to surface treat the steel chassis, I can't see any signs of undersealing which would make ne very nervous at that price, especially as its not an AFT but a Tintop with an add on roof.

I cant see any underseal either, although it has not had any advisories on the MOT for rust issues other than a general corrosion on the underside one. But nothing that points to a specific area / mounting point etc. You think £8.6k is a good price bearing in mind it needs some work to the rust patch on tail gate as a minimum?

If it wasn't undersealed on import then I would steer clear myself, trying to clean it and seal after the event is a bit late as UK salt will be in every crevice :-(
