Air conditioner compressor clutch

Post by Cooooooper » Tue Mar 25, 2025 10:36 pm

I believe that the clutch on my air conditioning compressor is seized but as I have no experience of these things, I’m not sure if it’s doing what it’s meant to or not! It had no belt on it when I bought it. When I turn the wheel that the belt would normally go around, it spins quite freely. But the fancy bit on the front will not turn by hand. Should it? See attached. It’s a 2004 2l petrol by the way.

The clutch is an electromagnetic one, the coil when energised at 12v creates a magnetic field that causes the two plates to pull together and engages the pully shaft with the pump shaft. Refer to the diagrams on-line 61-L11 & 61-L12 are the clutch plates and 61-L13 is the electromagnet;

I see. Thanks for that. So the wheel should turn freely until the clutch is activated and connects the wheel to the shaft and drives the compressor? So if I touch 12+ onto the wire going to L13, I should see/hear the electro magnet activating? Assuming it’s not broken.

That's right. The usual problem is that the pump has at some point failed and when the clutch engages the pulley starts slipping and causing problems and noises! Hence a lot of people remove the belt so that the other controls can be used but the cooling isn't engaged.

Thanks Geoff

I can’t find a compressor love love nor money to replace it with so I might have to take it apart and have a tinker with it. Like you say, if the belts off then I can’t damage anything else.

Bear in mind that the refrigerant also has an oil added to it for lubrication of the compressor, I have a feeling a lot of the problems come when the pipework leaks and refrigerant and oil is lost causing the seizure of the pump itself.
There are three possibilities depending on age and what is still working!
All use R134a refrigerant and PAG46 oil.

A full system prior to around 2000;
950 Grams & 14ml of oil.

If the rear air con system has been sealed then 700 Grams of refrigerant & 14ml of oil.

After 2000 (smaller diameter pipes were introduced) then 750grammes & 50ml of oil.

Hey - wondering if I have a similar issue.

Last few times I started Bongo there was a squeaking sound like pumps on a gym floor. This time it went on for a few seconds - and it seems the A/C isn’t working. Fans etc all blowing plenty of air but not cooling.

What’s a good thing to check first?

Lift the passenger seat up and listen to the compressor when you start up perhaps, check to see if the squeal is coming from the belt/compressor, also try turning the AirCon Off before starting then switch it on as that is when the clutch operates to engage the pulley with the compressor.

Probably not in Germany, I'm afraid, and I doubt anyone would do a job and then let you decide if you want to pay or not, but good luck.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.
