Radio not working after blowing 12v fuse

Post by whitevanandy » Sun Sep 21, 2025 3:13 pm

Hi everyone my first post here since getting my first Bongo recently, a 2.0 2004.
I plugged an accessory into the cigarette lighter socket,(sorry I’m old skool), and blew the fuse. About 5 seconds later the radio went off. I replaced the blown fuse and checked the radio fuse which is fine as is the one in the back of the radio. I can’t find an inline fuse but did find two big blue fuses in the middle of the engine bay which are both ok.
Is there a relay or another fuse box I’m wondering?
Thanks in anticipation.

The radio has two power supplies.
The first is from the unswitched supply and is used to ensure that the memory circuits are powered to retain the settings even when switched Off, it comes from the internal fuse panel top left fuse either 10Amp (Red) or in later years 15 Amp (Blue).
The second is the power for the radio when switched on and is supplied along with all the other Ancillaries from the 15 Amp (Blue) top right in the internal fuse box.
Some radios will also have there own fuse either in-line in the power cable or on the back panel itself, depends an Make and models.
Another possibility is its powered from a leisure Battery and is connected from the LB fuse panel where ever it is located under the bonnet normally.

Hi Geoff thanks for your reply.
The fuses in the main box are all ok. The only box I could see in the engine bay was the one I described originally and both 15’s are ok. It’s only a tiny box if that’s what I’m looking for but it is fed with cables from the LB. Just noticed central locking no longer works.

Do you have a leisure battery at all ?

If you have a leisure battery fitted then it is very likely that a number of circuits are switched across from the SB fuse panel to an added fuse panel for the LB. It is very likely that the fuse for Unswitched circuits (Radio backup, ECU backup, internal lights etc) is swapped to the LB, the Blind circuits 2 of them are switched and the Ancillaries which covers sockets, radio etc.
You will need to locate the fuses that these circuits are fed from the LB.

Thanks Geoff. I’m not hugely knowledgeable with electrics so I’ll try and post a video of what I’ve got and that may help you know what I’m looking at.

Hi Geoff, I wasn’t able to upload the videos, maybe too long? Would it be possible to WhatsApp or email them to you? I rechecked the fuses and replaced a couple of rusty ones and now the radio and 12v are permanently on even with the key removed!

Right OK, common problems all solvable!

First older radios and even some modern ones have the TWO supplies to them, one is an unswitched supply to retain memories - however because memory types are now available which don't need power (Flash types) newer radios no longer need this supply, so don't have this supply, also they don't need an On/Off switch because there expected to be wired via the Ignition switch - they forget that Campervans exist!!!!
However a wiring loom is available which handles these available on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?item= ... mperlec_uk scroll down these items and you will find a switched radio loom, which also handles all the Leisure battery wiring back to the original fuse panel as well.

For info its best to refer to the battery in front of the Driver as Starter Battery - SB. The battery in front of the Passenger is the Leisure Battery - LB.
You would be best to switch all the wiring coming from the LB over to the original fuse panel (4-wires) to the one listed above.

Goof luck.
