POWER STEERING ???

Post by haydn callow » Fri May 04, 2007 2:02 pm

Somthing I've noticed when sitting in Bongo. Just sitting there ticking over,
there is a bit of a rattling noise which sounds for all the world like a diesel engine rattle. As soon as the steering wheel is moved (either way) even a little bit the sound goes away. I guess it's more power steering than engine. Is this normal or has anyone any ideas ???

I noticed this in a previous thread haydn................it could be a PAS pump problem or just that the engine revs drop slightly when lock is applied and the note changes :?

Dandywarhol.. think your second suggestion could be right co's I started the enging from cold to-day and the noise was there and stopped when the wheel was touched. After i'd spent a few minutes crawling around trying to find out the source of the rattle the engine had warmed up and it had all but dissapeared. I think your right and it's more to do with engine revs. I suppose when the power steering is applied it must affect the revs a little.
Thanks for the idea. I will investigate further but I think you are on the case.

My last car (Mazda 323) did exactly the same, when ticking over if i turned the steering wheel a little, the rev's dropped.

It's normal - when the wheel is turned, the steering pump takes power from the engine and the revs drop slightly - you don't notice it when driving and throttle is used.
