Yup it doesn't sound like any sacrificial anode to me.

Are you absolutely sure about that? Have another look.

Absoloutly certain ....I have just looked "again" at a spare tank......There is quite a high flow through the tank so any restriction would not be helping the cause

Where are you looking because this cannot actually be seen unless the tank is physically split open.

Trust me...it is not there on my spare tank.........I can see down both holes and ther are totally unrestricted.....I also split and cut up a tank a couple of years ago....that also did NOT have whatever that object is.

The reason I am a bit persistent in asking is that Mike at Wheelquick told me that particular tank is definitely from a 2.5 diesel. Somebody is wrong.
OR
that particular gizmo (whatever it is) was put in some and not in others???????

I'll hopefully be getting my own to chop up soon.
I WILL FIND OUT

It is possible to put a coat hanger ect through with the restrictor in place.

A better view of it whatever it is.

For the record, I didn't cut one up, as I have repeated several times in this post. All I have seen are the pics at the beginning. And having read TGP's last post, there doesn't appear to be owt in there (unless that bit dislodged should be attached to summat)
NOT a bloody clue

I'm liking this thread.

Its like watching a developing Open University course in coolant management.

Keep it up chaps. =D> =D> =D>

ebygum or tonic may well donate to the cause. . . . .

hi, are the divisions actually cross braces to stop the exp tank swelling under pressure/heating.things like this are fitted to large fuel/oil tanks to brace the sides so the manufacturers can make them thinner.
on a simmilar subject has anyone found anything that will clean out the staining in a discoloured tank? im going to try a few chemicals tomorrow on a dirty one i have lying around.

You won't get the tank very clean as the brown staining is not on the surface...the plastic is stained right through.....more like "ageing" and if you have had a overheat" then it is worse,,,,The "baffles" give the tank great strength and stop "slopping"
That "restriction in TGP's does not look like the one at the start of this topic.....it just looks like the metal outlet pipe is protruding into the tank....that pipe is there to strengthen the plastic pipe and allow a decent clamp to be applied.
The one at the start of this topic has something across the opening if this pipe.

Hi all
Just received some pics which show pretty conclusively that there is nothing at all in the tube, It appears to have been an optical illusion (and a pretty good one at that)

Northern Bongolow - The cross bracings (egg box) construction certainly adds massively to the constructional strength. It would also prevent the contents 'sloshing' around within the tank, much the same as the divider plates do in petrol/milk tankers.
Cleaning? I recently followed a link by Kirsty on the subject of cleaning expeansion tanks and someone was using Coke (of all things) - but if it works, what the hell.

...and to mister munkey - sorry to dissapoint but as far as I'm concerned it's QED. Was interesting and at least I know what the inside of the tank looks like, but there appear to be no UFO's in there. :( :(

and to Haydn, apologies for doubting you

Bugger - you beat me to it, but at least we agree on that lot.
