Juddering pulling away?

Re: Juddering pulling away?
Nice to know, the first oil arrived today? use it for something, second oil arrives tomorrow I will change it then I have a longish drive well enough for the problem to surface again Sunday "out green laning" so find out then if it makes a difference.
Re: Juddering pulling away?
Hi do I fill the diff so it just comes out of the filler hole?
Thanks
Thanks

Yes the filler hole acts as a level indicator , always remove the level plug before you remove the drain plug.
Re: Juddering pulling away?
All done, just gotta try it tomorrow see if its made any difference, nothing came out with the oil so I would be surprised if it was the diff?

Many thanks for this reply, (and all the others) I bought that same oil, (after buying the wrong race oil first) drained the old oil, nothing came out i.e. debris but the drain plug is magnetic and there was a very slight sludge around that, nothing that I would worry about given the age and mileage.
So first longish drive yesterday towing a trailer with two dirt bikes on, about 140 miles round trip and its the first time I did not get any juddering at all, van was smooth as the whole journey!
Now I am nervous the juddering will come back if there is something wrong and it breaks the new oil down, but hopefully it does not.
I am now wondering (as its still rear wheel drive only), if like an earlier reply said the Vicious Coupling has gone and the wind up has caused the oil to break down, so I plan on keeping it 2 wheel drive for a few more longish drives to see if the problem comes back, if not I will reconnect the front prop shaft and get the coupling tested, if it passes and does not bring the problem back happy days, there is a couple of what ifs here but at least I have a good idea where the fault is if it comes back the rear diff! as new oil fixed it and I can get it replaced with a good idea it will go away long term. I would not have thought an oil change could make this go away, but if its a limited slip and the oil was dead or the wrong oil then I suppose it could cause this after a long drive, as the oil breaks down with use and heat.
Here's hoping I will post more results when I have any.

Re: Juddering pulling away?
I may have missed it in the previous replies but did you test it to see if it's LSD or standard as per Northern Bongo's suggestion? Also have you checked the vent on the top is clear to ensure there is no build up of pressure as the oil expands?
The factsheet also covers how to establish which type is fitted: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/member ... ential.pdf
Out of interest, did you order 1 litre or 2? The capacity of standard rear diff is stated as 1.4 litres so I guess it was the latter.

Re: Juddering pulling away?
Didn't get round to check which diff I have, oil as pervious post said it was good for a standard or LSD diff.
The breather had a thin film of oil round the top, so felt like fumes where getting out, how doe you test the breather?
Bought 2 x 1litre of the oil and it took at least 1.4-.5 of that. I kept putting it in and a little extra to make sure it was running out of the filler hole, then when that stopped put the filler bolt back in, so I did waste a little.
Just going to see how it goes now. I will get the diff checked when I get the front prop shaft back on. The van is completely sealed underneath so can't tell if it has a yellow sticker/paint.
Thanks

Re: Juddering pulling away?
Well its been a while, but I changed the diff oil, all seemed good on 140 round trip mile run, so then put the front prop shaft back on, making it 4wd again, went to Tenby from Liverpool and the van ran perfect not one problem! so plus on the poster who said change the diff oil, obviously has a LSD and the wrong oil had been used in the past, just glad it didn't damage anything, and saved me getting a second hand axle and diff, which would have fixed the problem, but would have cost £380 or so and taken the LSD out, been away with a mate who has a LWB T4 front wheel drive and he gets stuck regular in slippy conditions, the 4WD bongo sails though it!! even had to pull him out sometimes! how satisfying that is!! lol
