ignition

Post by karen » Tue Apr 03, 2007 4:11 pm

just to amke sure before i end up with any more bits

my key stuck in ignition avgain - will not budge
i have removed the steering wheel then i assume i just need to slide the indicator bits up and then the ignition bits

is it the whole part that you repl;ace or just part of it?

are these generic or where do you get them - any idea of costs

cheers

Before you go dismantling too much remember that various operations need to be completed before the Bongo will let you remove the key.

Like the selector being in PARK.

There has been a thread on this very topic.

yep been down them before

it stuck once before and i managed to get some lubricant down the key and jiggle for 10 mins but this time no joy

i assume the barrel is just full of gunge or has a burr or something

it's ok today as i had stopped at home but last thing i want is to be on hols and it sticks

will have a play with it when i get it off

Karen

Until you sort it, could you not use the spare key for the door and just leave the other one in the ignition, draping a jumper or something that looks like you dumped it there over the whole steering wheel / ignition lock area but which hides the key. Not perfect but I'd be fairly relaxed about that

ok
steering wheel is off
cant get the indicators off - i have removed the clip
do you remove the yellow front bit or ?
dont want to just yank it

however i turned the key and it popped straight out sodo i squirt the lubricant in again and also from the top - i can see the locking mech that moves when i use the key and pop it to gether again or should i replace the lock

Lubricant? What sort are you using?

Locks should have only graphite or dryfilm PTFE sprayed in them.

I can understand your concern with leaving the key in karen, my bongo suffered this problem once, ( a few years ago now) it turned out that my key was ever so slightly bent,it was hardly noticeable actually... I remedied the situation by wrapping some masking tape around the jaws of a pair of pliers, then very gently "massaged" the key back into shape, gently, and slowly!... Ive not had a problem since (touchwood)

When it was stuck it wasn,t neccessary to dismantle anything to free the key,i simply switched on the engine, moved the gear selector up and down a few times, switched back off, applied some forward pressure on to the gear selector with my left elbow, and jiggled the key out,at the same time.

No probs since i straightened the key! Bear in mind, the key only had a very slight kink in it... Good luck
