nightmare day

well all , have had a nightmare day , coming back from bideford today and heard a bang then the battery and sediment light came on , i thought no i have thrown a belt , pulled over in a safe place by now there was a humming noise as well , threw the passenger seat up and found the alternator pulley missing , seems the pulley has sheared off and threw both belts off cant find the pulley just the alternator with the shaft and bolt , anybody else had this problem ?? need to find a pulley and try putting it back on the alternator

sorry to hear about that-not a nice thing to happen.as for parts perhaps a breakers(bellhill for example)or via ebay .
dont forget ians partfinder.

Ouch. Sounds scary but not bank ruining, which is good in a bad sort of way. Is the alternator pulley not part of the alternator unit i.e. a replacement will come with a pulley on it? Expect I'm being dumb here so will await corrective training on this thread.

i think i have an old alternator with the pulley still on will have to sort through the shed and pull it out and put the pulley on the van alternator hopefully it will work ok (crossed fingers)

Check the thread on the shaft isn't damaged - try to find out why the pulley came off - it's usually either a nylock nut or a plain nut with spring waher which means it shouldn't come undone - especially as the direction of rotation would always by trying to tighten the nut

hi guys
well stripped it off today to take a look , this is what i found




luckily i had an alternator that had gone T**s up so , took both to my local garage and they changed the pulleys over for £5 for me brought it back re-fitted and sorted all working fine
bongo back in business

cheers simon i got the bongo from john he didnt have anything there when i rang him but offered help if i needed it , doesnt seem to be a common thing although john had it happen to him on a motorway once , so i would only assume that over time maybe the alternator nut comes loose slightly and tehrefore the pulley starts to slip and wears , so guys i would check this everytime you have the seat up

do you know was the pully held in place with a woodruf key or by high tourque on the bolt?

No woodruff key just force on the nut and a collered washer behind

nuts wasnt loose , buy wasnt super tight also so im putting it down to possible casting defect and also possible nut not correctly tightned up
other than that its going well once again

My old alt is still in two bits, as I wait to get my nut removed, so I can to check/replace front bearing ( if I can get hold of one). I'll need to get a garage to remove the nut, as I could not shift it.

I'd keep my eye on it R & K - there's been a lot of heat in that shaft by the "blueing" on the threads

that was the camera flash lol the pulley when it came loose caught the top thread on its way off so the camera flash picked up the mark it made when it flew off , am deffo keeping an eye on it now though another thing to check when doing routine checks lol
