Leisure battery not powering the bits it should - views sort

The leisure battery is supposed to power 1 x 12v socket, 1 x light, 1 x water pump. None of these are working. Even when hooked up to mains. I have checked known fuses and cant find fault. I have only had the van since March. I took it to a electrical place and teh man sucked in his breathe and told me it was unsafe and that I should have it all redone

1) from these pictures what are the problems?

2) Is it that bad?

3) Ideas can I get the 12 v stuf workign again.

If you had not posted those pictures, which reminds me that I must have a word with my sons nursery about the fact that he had spaghetti for lunch AND tea today, I would have made a suggestion ....

I still will, but that's a horrible mess there and if your bits aren't working on mains either (I assume you've got some sort of unit to switch between 12v and mains?).

Anyway, back to the suggestion. My 12v socket, which normally happily powers whatever is plugged into it (usually water pump and cool box) suddenly stopped working. No obvious signs of a problem, so I took it to my lovely local auto-electrician, who finally discovered that there's a little diode which is underneath the socket linking one of the wires to the centre of the socket had wobbled loose. Can't remember which one he said, and I wasn't there to see it but that could be worth a look.

Personally, I wouldn't touch anything electrical unless it was changing a fuse or something equally straightforward. Looking at that tangle in there doesn't not give me much faith in the workmanship of the person who did the wiring. Most electricians of my acquaintance (even the incompetent one who did some stuff in our house) at least leave everything neat and tidy.

Hi casls650, Looks like one of my recording sessions....

It certainly needs a Qualified expert eye to tidy that up!
No real thought seems to have gone into the installation...

That may or may not be safe. (I can guess....)

One thing is pretty certain - no auto electrician is going to even attempt to repair that. Anyone willing to fix your problems will want to re-wire it from scratch.

At the end of the day, any Bongo camping wiring system is reasonably simple though. Looks like you have a charger and a split-charge relay in there which could be re-used if they are working. These can cost a bit, so potentially it won't be stupidly expensive to put right.

There is also a 8mm gas pipe in view in your first photo. Now, if that is the electrical system that the previous owner left in (I'm assuming that there is no electrical safety certificate with thet lot?), what is the gas installation like? Do you have a certificate from a Gas Safe installer regarding the gas installation?

You would have to admit, there is a fair likelyhood of a spark being created with that wiring layout - if there is indeed any power in there at all. If the gas install isn't up to scratch, you could potentially have a very dangerous situation there.

OMG - no wonder the auto-electrican wouldn't touch it. It would probably take him longer to trace what wires do what, than it would to start again. Whoever did that obviously had no wire cutters to trim the wires to length and tidy them up
I can honestly say that, based on your photos, any remedial suggestion would probably be pure guesswork

in the olden days when i was a sparky, i would rip that lot out and start again, THAT is terrible. sorry but that's my opinion

2.Where was all that wiring. What have you had to move to show it to us? I seem to recall that before you had a lovely picture of your Bongo in a covered car park (v ) you had a rather attractive conversion. Was it you who had the leisure battery in an odd place? Can't really work out what is where in the photos.

No it was a professional conversion. Worse things is I paid good money for this.

The first time I looked at the van it had all Seats. The whole conversion was done by the company I bought it from. I dont have gas or electrical safety certificates. Should I?

I sent a complaint to them yesterday, also about the tyres as lumps are coming off them. I was going to get an AA report done on the vehicle prior to buying it, but they advised me that they would get an independent mechanics report, which I have, and together with the warranty nothing else would be needed.

1) Yes it did work, then the light seemed to fade, and now nothing. I dont know what is different, the only thing I can think of is either a fuse has gone, there is a loose wire, or the only reason it worked before was it was fully charged and now it has discharged

2) Yes I have the oddly placed battery. This is in the cupboard in the middle under the sink. I have not had to move anything to take the pictures, that is what it is like. If you close the door then I am back to the lovely looking conversion. To top all the wire issues, Scary the electrician said that the battery has no outside vent so I will breath in toxic fumes

Hi Cas - It does seem to be a bit of a can of worms you've opened there but theres bound to be someone local on here who can either give it the once over or at least Knows A Man Who Can . . . . .

Possibly as cheap, labour wise, to just get the whole lot replaced than to spend out a days work just to trace any faults.
