Post by cynfal » Thu Jun 03, 2010 8:56 am

Ive started having strange grinding sounds coming from my steering wheel when I drive. Any ideas what this could be and is it safe to drive

It maybe the airback clock spring mechanism as I had the same issue with mine.

Check the level of the fluid in the power steering reservoir - mine did the same and the tank was nearly empty, due to the common seal leak

Nearly as bad as a gray seal leak, but easily solved with some loperimide laced fish
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

Mine did that too, turned out to be steering fluid had gone! This might be completely obvious to you, but I had no idea where to find it - it's under the driver's seat.

Good luck

The Power Steering Fluid is full and working OK. Sounds more like bearing wearing away somwhere

Check to see if it's rubbing anywhere on the column & a bit of lube on the UJ's may help - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html
Could be the pinion gears fubar? unlikley though - http://www.lushprojects.com/bongopartsm ... mgno=.html

Is it a standard Mazda one or an aftermarket wheel with a Boss?

I have having the same problem.
Going to spray the UJs with loads of WD40 and see if this solves the problem.
I think the UJs are sticking and are pushing the column shaft up towards the plastic cover and causing it to make a "strange sound".
Heat maybe causing the UJs to dry out.
Will check fluid first, after previous posts. Smilie with thumbs up.

Fluid was fine.
Sprayed both joints with wd40 and the steering has been transformed from a notchy tight feel to nice and light.
Gave her a wash and inner clean for being a good bongo.
The upper joint at the pedals has very little clearance space and a tiny amount of seizure will have the joint touching the column down tube.
This noise transfers up the column and leads to the strange noise.
I am sure it is the upper joint that is the problem.
A bit of newspaper underneath and a good spray will give you a new feel to the steering.
I came back a day early because I thought my steering was about to give up. \:D/
