I brake but the engine keeps driving

Post by redmindan » Mon Jun 14, 2010 9:43 am

Yesterday i braked to turn right but the van kept driving until I braked hard enough to stall it. The brakes are fine and the van tick over as normal in neutral. I got it home by knocking it into neutral when stopping, but pulling away was a case of getting the revs up and launching by putting into drive.

it has been suggested that there is a torque convertor problem. has anyone had this problem or know if there is a common cause for it?

Thanks

The throttle wasnt just stuck open was it in a Toyota stylee? Make sure the accelerator and cable isnt jammed and moves freely. What werethe revs doing at this point?

If the engine is stalling (& it's automatic!) & it is trying to drive on against the brakes as you try to stop then it is definitely the lock up clutch in the torque converter staying on, it will be like pulling up at a junction in a manual car & not using the clutch. The problem may not be the converter itself though, it could be a solenoid & or a valvebody issue, in theory it could also be an ECU problem but highly unlikely. Often in these cases the converter itself is fine, it is just doing what it is being (incorrectly) told to do by a malfunctioning control system.

Not an issue I have ever come across before in one of these tranny's.

Thanks Alacrity, you seem to have grasped the problem.
Unfortunately it looks like a new one on most people, so it looks like a trip to the auto transmission specialist?

Sounds exactly like what I had. Be careful in reverse cos mine just took off at a serious rate of knots. Eventually I broke reverse and managed to get a second hand gearbox eventually.

It looks that way I'm afraid redmindan. I don't know where you are in the country, if you add your location to your profile people can advise you of local help.

There is Automatic Gearboxes, Poole who has recently sorted out a member of this forum, but I would be extremely surprised if you will need a reconditioned trans, as I mentioned earlier, it will most likely be the control side at fault, so it could be something as simple as a solenoid which can be dealt with without removing the trans from the vehicle.
