V6 petrol - tip if it's not as perky as expected

Hi guys,

Recently I've been thinking that my V6 bongo wasn't as lively at lower speeds than I recalled. I put it down to perception as the car is in top order and serviced well etc.

Anyway, I was due in at discount trucks last week for a few bits including the exhaust, and one thing on my hit list was to check the adjustment of the throttle position sensor as I have details of how this can be set up using a multimeter to measure various outputs.

The background to this was while back mine failed and I replaced it, just putting it back in the same position as the last one.

Anyway, access to the connectors on the V6 TPS is very hard, I guess the best way would be to get an old connector plug and make a testing loom so you could plug that in and get the measurements that way.

In the end we decided to set it in the middle, as it was almost impossible to get at the connectors and it was set way over one way. The range of adjustment on this is quite small, I'd say around 5mm.

Thought was put it in the middle, if worse I could put it back or forward a touch and see what was best.

Well I have to say, just putting it in the middle has made a big difference.

There is probably more to it than when it changes gear, but it does keep the engine in a better rev range, and changes up and down better more in keeping with the road speed. I felt before that just as it started picking up it would then change gear too early so the engine would drop out of it's torque band and struggle back up.

So, if you ever have this, worth checking the TPS setting. Sometimes the little things can make a noticeable difference.

I will keep an eye out for a suitable connector to make up a test loom, be interesting to see if it can be made better but I'm happy for now, gearchanges are nice and smooth as well (they were before) and MPG if anything slightly better but that really needs to be measured over time as 2 fill ups are not enough to know much other than it hasn't messed it up.
