Using Pela Pump to change coolant

Hi,

Has anybody used a Pela (or similar type hand pump)to Vacuum change coolant.

I would seem that a few of the Rover people use a Pela 6000 to carry out this function using a Rubber Bung/T-piece and a couple of clamps.

That all looked a bit too Heath Robinson to me, but it'd be interesting to see if it works & how much time/aggro it takes

I would have thought that a Pela pump could only create enough vacuum to fill itself - once full of coolant, there is no vacuum left. Can't see how it can be done in stages either :? - probably totally wrong though

Looks okay to me........ will take longer than 5 minutes....

but the physics is all there and enough "suck" too....and the 75 has an 8.2 litre cooling system which kind of addresses the coolant amount........better ask a lady I know if she has some rubber bungs in her Lab of the right size for a Bongo.... if it works.....then I must get some labels made with Mazda Bongo on them.....ready for ebay....

Hi John,

You only start the vacuum process when the coolant has been drained from the system.

Should work with the same technique as the Rover as the engine has the same set up as a Bongo with the Thermostat on the return side of the cooling system....

would the vacuum causing the pipes to collapse cause extra stress on old and weakened pipes increasing the chances of splitting?

I don't think I would try it on old pipes

On old pipes I guess that could be an issue but then of course the system would be empty and leaks would show up and a plus point is then, you can replace the defective hoses......
