interior lights seem to have no fuse!

Post by integraR » Sat Aug 14, 2010 5:26 pm

Hi I have been working on my girlfriends 96 bongo and I have been putting in a leisure battery and I have followed all the great guidence on here (saved me a huge amount of time!)

I have cut the 2 wires behind the fusebox connecting the top row to divert them to the leisure battery but on testing the lights (with no power connected from the new battery) the fluro light will still come on if the doors opened and if I switch it on also.

I had no power to the side door release with the wires cut and the stereo was dead also, thats all I tested to see if it had knocked the power out.

I then reinstated the original wires and tested the same again and the door and stereo worked fine again so I turned the light on and went through the fuses pulling one out at a time and it stayed on! I went through all 2 lower rows and nothing made it go out. I left the 2 relay/reseting looking ones at bottom right and left as I dont know what there linked to or if they were fuses!.

I found some pretty poor wiring that I pulled out (what looked like jap twin and earth minus the earth with no fused connection to the battery that had been cut and not disconnected or had the ends properly finished so there was a un fused live just stuck up in the dash :shock:

There are no added connections (now) on either of the batterys so I am totally stuck and Im thinking I have missed something can anybody help me out with some words of wisdom??

Fuse No.1 (10A) is cabin lights (I think).

Oh - and welcome to the club. (never been quick enough to be the first to say that) :lol:

Off the top of my head, & apart from thinking pixie dust...

You wouldn't have some sort of factory fitted camper unit fitted in the back would you..?

I was starting to think of second battery allready fitted but alas no factory fitted units, just a conversion done over a year ago but they did not do any wiring just built a bed and some storage.

I have been servicing the bongo for 2 years now and not found anything hiding elsewhere apart from a bit of dogy wiring in the front that led to nothing, there are a fair few scotch lock connectors with no extra wires coming out of them so I think the van was pretty tricked out in japan 8) but all these seem to have been made safe and not left in a bad way like the other wire.

I know what yer saying.. There were a couple of things i followed up from the previous Jap owner... :wink:

Here is a wild one...!?? Maybe your florescent light is self powered (Non standard Mazzy issue.) Similar principle to an emergency exit light...?

The rear light is unscrewed and theres just the 3 wires going to it and it looks std issue, if there is a emergency light unit somewhere then im screwed! I have never seen any backup cells hidden anywhere! I have some spare emergency lights that have been reworked to use as camping lanterns and there pretty cool! hope it aint the case in the van, dont know about regs in japan but all uk tubes seem to be 8W and this looks more 6W (in length)

Yep 3 wires, white connection block.. One live, one constant ground, (switching on when door shut.) One ground to door trigger... Opposite side to exposed 5 or 3 contact pins (depending on if soft closure fitted to sliding door.)

Anther thought...? Maybe the light tied into the bottom 4 row on the left 15A, meant for the sliding door in some mad Jap re rout experiment..? :?

I have tried pulling them out one by one but I left the two pink fuses on the bottom row that look like self resetting fuses so I might try them tomorow but I think its time for some liquid thought!

Thanks all we shall resume battle tomorow.

The wiring diagram is here for the cargo area lights;

Try pulling the larger fuse 40Amp fuse BTN under the bonnet, if this puts the lights out then suspect either a modification or a short across the top right fuse within the wiring loom;

If it doesn't then you really need to find out where that power is coming from and if it is fused !
