Cardiff Car Body Repairs - Arches

Post by dom_e » Tue Sep 21, 2010 10:03 pm

The arches on my Bongo are looking a bit rusty in places, possibly due to my lack of ability on a DIY repair (I wonder if the paint I used and the conditions it was sprayed in left it porous?).

I'm looking to get them sorted before it becomes an expensive problem.

Can anybody recommend a Cardiff (or surrounding area) body repairs / spraying place?

The best looking place I can find using the tinterweb is http://www.accidentrepairscardiff.com/

Cheers.

Do you think you need welding or is it just fill/paint required?

I'm not sure Mike. I was going to take it over to SMS at some point next week for them to prod it about.

I did a DIY fix on some minor rust, with the aim to stop it spreading. However, I fear I just made it worse! I'm relutact to start poking around without being able to finish the job, so thought it would be wise to get it looked at properly.

Any thoughts? You around this WE? Fancy a prod?

Not around for another week or so but could have a look for you? Before Bongo's it was T2 Bay Window vans for me, so I know a thing or two about rusting vans :D so doing a good job with the filler and spraying etc. is someting I am used to. I can't weld very well yet (well, not good enough for sills etc) but as I said good with the old plastic filler. Take it for a quote and see what they say would be my advice.

I have found a place next to Nick's Garage in Taffs Well. Does anybody have experience if them? Apparently, they currently have a Bongo in for some sort of work.

I'm taking mine up there later, so will report back.

I have the same problem with the arches on mine. I'm going for the rust removed and arches then put over the top route!

I will then have the whole van re-sprayed up to the top line of the windows as it could do with a tidy up!

There is a sprayer off hadfield road in the market area that is happy to do mine, he is a mate of a mate, will find out the name of the garage!

Great. Let me know his details if you could please. I'd like to make a decision tomorrow since I need it done for a weekend away soon. :)

That's reassuring I guess!

It's in the garage now - thought I'd get that sorted + other small dings, scratches and bits of rust where paint's been removed (such as the boot lip) before it gets too bad. I've asked him to take pics along the way.

The guy also went around the Bongo pointing out all of the other areas that had been sprayed in the past, which got me a bit worried! I guess at 15 years old, it's bound to have had a few scratches, but all seems sound mechanical wise. It doesn't seem to be full of filler.

Which garage did you go for, and if you don't mind me asking, how much is he charging?....I need to get mine done and would like to weigh up the options!

A chap called Andy who works as far as I can tell at Nick's Motors in Taffs Well - on the estate op. the train station there. I'll give you his number if he does a good job! I've asked him to take pics throughtout, more for geeky interest than to check quality.

We agreed on £700, which initally sounded like a lot, but does include a lot of other work beyond the arches. I thought I may as well go the (almost) whole hog rather than patching areas.

I'll let you know the outcome - hopefully by Wed/Thu next week.
