Re: best buy trolley jack & axle stands
I bought a two ton trolley jack from a local shop (£20) the bongo is about 2 ton but since your only lifting one side at a time works out at half a ton a wheel (i think that's how it works)
the only problem Ive had is the cup on the trolley jack is not quite big enough for the bongo ,so I'm going to weld an extra piece onto the jack.

Lost without my Bongo.

Re:Trolley jack & axle stands
Hi All,
I thought long 'n' hard about this problem when I got my Bongo as I had visions of being stuck(ish) with a puncture on a camp site's soft grass or track never mind on the road and having to lift the vehicle.
I therefore purchased a 3ton air jack that is inflated by using the vehicle exhaust gases.
Comes is a bag with instructions, protective mats etc and looks a well made product, tho I haven't tried it yet.
Available in the car parts area of www.conrad-uk.co for around £55.
All the best

Air jacks are good, if you can get one (they were like hen's teeth a while back), and the Draper one at least is in a small holdall, so it's easy to keep stowed in the motor - mine's always aboard. They can also be used (as in undercarriage-collapsed aircraft use, for example) to move a bogged down Bongo, in stages, onto firm ground. However, if you plan to get under the motor while using one, as also with hydraulic jacks, it's still vitally important to use axle stands - jack seals, air or oil, can give way at any time, and two tons then descends very fast indeed (just see what happens when you open a jack release valve quickly).
Halfords are selling their 2.25 tonne hi-lift 4x4 trolley jack, reduced from £79.99 to £39.99, and I find the cup on that is fine. Ratchet axle stands, 2 tonne per pair, £21.99 - or 3 tonne per pair, £27.99. Wheel chocks, £5.99 per pair.

I'm with the 3 tonners, having witnessed a new (Halfords?) 2 tonner explode while trying to lift the front end of a Bongo
Re: best buy trolley jack & axle stands
Hope that was taken up with Halfords, Mike?

Re: best buy trolley jack & axle stands
I advised the person to take it back, but they weren't bothered and I took it down to the dump on my next visit. I would have returned it myself if I'd been them but hey.Ron Miel wrote:Hope that was taken up with Halfords, Mike?
Have to say also that my 2 ton jack did, on one occasion, raise the car OK, but on another occasion it felt like it was being severly strained. So I stopped and released the pressure.
Taken overall, on the basis that once is unfortunate but twice is........, it has left me convinced that its safer to go for a 3 ton jack.
Re: best buy trolley jack & axle stands
Pity when people don't bother about things like that - sounds like it was dangerous, and they could injure somebody, so that needed a heavy fuss made, don't you reckon?
My 2.25 tonne Halfords fortunately does well, never the slightest sign of stress so far - but, as I said, I wouldn't trust any of them without a pair of stands, although obviously a 3 tonne jack should "eat it" (but so should a 2 tonne one!).

Aha! Googles converter tells me 2.25 tonnes = 2.48020045 short tons, so maybe yours is better than my old 2 ton one (no idea about this other blokes burst one as its long gone so can't check). Agree totally about axle standsRon Miel wrote:Pity when people don't bother about things like that - sounds like it was dangerous, and they could injure somebody, so that needed a heavy fuss made, don't you reckon?

Re: best buy trolley jack & axle stands
I got a 2 ton Hilka trolly jack.......only used to raise each corner before placing the Bongo on some 30 year old Paddy Hopkirk brand Axle stands....(not made of monkey metal)......
I chose this jack due to it's high lift and fast lift capabilities.... Lidl have some axle stands net week on offer, I can't speak for the quality but I would guess they are GS approved....but they still might not be suitable for the job......
I have 2 sets of ramps too for the Full underbelly access.....and changing ARB bushes and drop links....
On that note.......anyone greased their nipple(s)........... Found this earlier will mail my Japanese contacts later about this....
