Flashing glow plug light /limp mode on cold start up only.

Post by berrega » Thu Oct 28, 2010 6:04 pm

The van [new shape year 2000 fly-by-wire] was fixed for a few months and here we are back on here again.

When I start from cold first thing in the morning as soon as the vehical moves the glow plug light starts flashing and it drops in to limp mode. It stays in annoying turbo less flashy yellow mode until I park it at my destination.

If I start the vehaical again while the engine is still a little warm it starts fine and runs fine. After this it runs fine for the rest of the day until the next morning.

The first time it happened I was tired and I tried to start the engine without waiting for the glowplug light to go out first. I had fogotten I was in a diesel. It started fine but the glowplug light came on and I smelt a faint burning smell, like some wiring had melted?

I've checked the IAT sensor.
The water temperature sensor was changed a few months ago.
The glowplugs were changed earlier this year.

any ideas?

your best bet is to read the code and that will tell you what the problem is or at least narrow it down, I've seen water temp sensors that cause a fault once the car is up to temperature, but not around the other way?

just a stab really but you say its had the glow plugs changed, did the fault start then??or shortly after.
i would check that they are the correct plugs.and that they are working well.
then check that the 2 cold start relays next to the glow plug rail are doing what they should--setting the throttle for a cold start!!.check the vac pipes to the solenoids/pump,if one of these has been disturbed/broken,which is possible as you have to move/remove these to fit the glow plugs.
