charge light

Post by karena » Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:21 pm

last night the charge and sediment lights came on when we pulled up - set off again and they went off pulled up again and they came back on - thinking it was alternator related although we did the lights test and they were bright and not dimming i fully expected the battery to be flat this morning but she started first touch -after the engine was running about ten minutes (lots of defrosting to do) the lights came back on again - set off the lights went off - pulled up back on again - keith is checking the sediment cup and the wires does anyone have any other ideas ? wondered if it was a cold related thing but we,d done a few miles so the engine should have been warm.

Charge and Sediment together mean Alternator problems :-( Given the temperatures your experiencing it might be worth waiting to see what happens when it warms up a bit ?

Sounds like a tired alternator to me. hen you drive off, the revs come up and the alternator can give out enough voltage to keep the charge light off. When the engine is at idle though, output drops straight off again.

Do you have a volt meter you can put on the battery? If you take to a garage, they can quickly check it for you.

If it is the alternator, it is quite easy but you are looking at around £150 for the part though.

A bit expensive but I think you get an original bongo one back which I understand is preferable to some of the cheaper ones out there. I'd check to see what sort of unit you get back before buying.

or:

No exchange unit needed

cheaper options on ebay if you want to take a risk:
