drive shaft I think can anyone help

Post by jcozens » Fri Dec 10, 2010 9:41 am

Hi all, my van has been making a noise from the rear but only when it is in gear and when I take my foot off the accelerator, if I place it in neutral or if I put the hand brake up a bit the noise goes, it sounds like something is not matching properly like when you used to put a playing card on your bike as a kid thats the best way to describe it. I'm showing my age I know! Any ideas would be great.

Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive, petrol or diesel ? have you had a look under the vehicle to see if its anything obvious, is the exhaust rubbing on the rear axel tiebar when people are in the back, also where are you located as there maybe another member who's near you and can have a lill looky for ya

does it happen when you are moving or stationary ?,

as you say it stops when you pull the hand brake up a bit, it might be the hand brake cable touching the body/chassis somewhere and rattling and when you pull the hand brake a bit the tension changes in the cable and moves it away a little bit so it stops ?

Loose rear wheel?

I've had this before - and although the wheels looked tight, and passed the 'shake test', one rear wheel was actually loose when I checked with a torque wrench.
