Running cold V6

Post by splash2 » Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:55 am

Hi All,

I drove my Bongo from Gloucester to Bristol this morning, about 40 miles. The temperature gauge never moved - should I be worried?

Your thermostat is probably jammed open. It shouldn't cause any short term harm, but I'd get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Could well be the above or a fault in the sensor/wire/gauge.......my V6 runs cool but the gauge moves up tp normal in a couple of miles.

Or else it hasn't got one - it has been known. Out of interest, does the gauge normally move to the 11.00 o'clock position then stay in that position all the time? Or has it been known to drift down a bit at times, especially when you are on the move?

Mike.....I think we can assume that things have been normal up to this trip....implication of that being a Stat is fitted.
Are the heaters working as normal ?? if so it points to a fault in the gauge circuit.....if not then a stuck Stat

Did your heaters get hot?

As an ex-Army bloke Haydn, you'll know the danger of assuming things

Better considered unneccessarily than overlooked unfortunately 8)

Thank you all for your replies. Re the above: The gauge normally sits at 11 o'clock and never moves. There's not much heat coming from either heater.

Have you checked the coolant level Splash2?

Hmmmm. Don't much like the sound of that. Have you checked your coolant level? If its low it isn't sufficient just to top it up as if air has got into the system meanwhile, it will need bleeding out. You shouldn't drive it until this has been been done as there's a risk of damaging the engine (although its the diesel that is well known to be damaged in this situation - not so much reported about the V6 or 2.0l petrol engines).

See if the techies agree with the above 8)

PS - Bigdaddy already has (beaten me tuit  )

Yes - coolant level is right up to the top so I guess I need to investigate the state of the thermostat.
