Unknown noise ... someone help please
Hi All,
First of all happy new year to all bongo owners.
I will try to describe my problem, To let you understand i am a bit deaf so noises may go un-noticed by me. I took my wife to tesco yesterday shopping , first time she has been in it for months. As we were going round bends she said there was a graunching type of noise , she thinks it was near-side rear. Also i did hear a noise when i was accelerating up a small hill hard to describe what it sounds like (perhaps rattlely). When its on the flat it is fine no noise at all. Coincidentally i put some product called cataclean in day beforehand , after 30 mile drive i stopped to re-fill with petrol i could smell like burning rubber with a high temprature type of smell (sorry cannot think of another way to describe it.) . Bongo runs excellent its just the noises appeared yesterday (day after i added additive) Dont know if its just co-incidental. All oils and coolant at normal.
Anyway has anyone got an inkling to my problem .
Bong is 2 wheel drive , 2.5 V6 1999 model.
Many thanks all ........... Harry

Re: Unknown noise ... someone help please
I may be way off ( and probably am )but its worth a look, When we were in europe earlier this year we had a similar noise to the one your describing and it turned out to be low coolant causing the water to swoosh in the water system behind the dash, the noise was only there under acceleration and up hills, on the flat it went away, me and dan couldn't decide whether the noise was front or rear, it wasn't until it started to overheat the next day and we topped it up that the noise went away, for me it was the begining of head gasket issue that were sorted by the dealer when i returned to england .

Re: Unknown noise ... someone help please
It seems a little coincidental that you used "cataclean" recently and now you have a rattling type noise and accompanying burning smell coming from (possibly) The exhaust area...
From what i can gather cataclean "steam cleans" the catalytic converter, supposedly improving the performance/emissions. Could i ask what prompted you to try the product? had you sensed performance falling off at all, or was it a case of chucking it in as a precation?
I have no evidence to suggest that the product may have "overcleaned" (for want of a better term) the exhaust system, but could the addition of the product killed a failing cat? (do the petrol bongo's have a cat? I'm not clued up on them).
I'd be tempted to whip the bongo on a ramp and give the whole exhaust system a damn good shake to listen out for tell tale signs of a collapsed silencer baffle, or (if fitted) a rattling cat
(if the cat does rattle it's fluffed i'm afraid)

I saw a post on this forum about the product .. seemed favourable so read some reviews which were favourable also , but not the link you have posted (wish i had)bigdaddycain wrote:It seems a little coincidental that you used "cataclean" recently and now you have a rattling type noise and accompanying burning smell coming from (possibly) The exhaust area...

Re: Unknown noise ... someone help please
Oh i understand your thought and drive to try the product Chakota, After research you thought what harm could it do? I'm not saying it definitely has caused any damage, it could just be coincidental. And your preventative maintenance attitiude is very prudent indeed
Without further investigation it's difficult to suggest a solution really, exept it may well be worth a visit to a trusted exhaust fitter that could have a fiddle around with the exhaust to either condemn it, or give it the all clear so that you could search elsewhere for the source of the annoying rattle...

Many thanks for your opinion bdc , do you know a link for exhaust detail for the 2.5 lt V6 1999 , looks a bit weird underneath... does the V6 have a cat. ?
Many thanks for your input.....Harry

Re: Unknown noise ... someone help please
It does indeed help very much, thank you Teenmal!
I always forget about the lushprojects parts database
So the answer is yes, there is indeed a Catalytic converter in the system...

Re: Unknown noise ... someone help please
Possibly... The addition of cataclean, then the noise could well be nothing more than a coincidence.
