Head gasket bolts and poundage

Post by paulwooding1973 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 10:38 am

Hi

The head gasket has gone on my Bongo and my garage need some technical data. Apologies for any errors in the following request but it's all a bit Greek to me!

They need to know when replacing head gasket – do we need new cylinder head bolts (are the Bongo ones throw away) and if so, so what is poundage/newton metres/degrees to tighten it down with.

I have an N-reg 2 wheel drive diesel with the original engine (as far as I know)

If anyone can help me out on that it would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Paul

hi

dont know on the torque setting but i believe its recomended that new head bolts are used

just found this on another thread

Tightened bolts hand tight and then four times to torque settings 22 ft/lbf (Bongo manual says 4 times, Ford ranger says 3)
Then put a paint mark on all the bolt heads and turned in sequence 90º
Then once more to a further 90º turn.

link to thread http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ue#p401141

best wait for someone to confirm its correct though

From Mazda manual, torque setting is 29Nm (3 to 4 times as said before).
However, there is a procedure Mazda have laid out. If you want this sequence, send me a pm.

More importantly make sure the head is skimmed and pressure tested (costs around £50)

Its a common fault with bongo's

If that garage say no need please insist it is done other cars you can get away with bongo's you cant

Make sure he looks at the bleeding a bongo cooling system on you tube also (as he isnt familiar with bongo's by the sounds of it)

Also it will pay for you to watch the you tube bleeding bongo vids

If he doesnt your head will blow again before you get it home .

Fitting a new head gasket is not "normally" a fix......as said above get the head tested or you may find you are going through all this again very soon......has you garage done bongo's before...if not...as above....MAKE SURE THEY FOLLOW THE BLEEDING INSTRUCTIONS (contact me for a copy) and watch the vidio's (search "bleeding bongo's on UTUBE)

And yes!! you do need to fit the correct new head bolts.....available from the bongo shop...as is gaskets and cylinder heads

Hi paulwooding1973,

That is very interesting, did the mechanic or yourself actually see the burst in the head gasket.
Hope everything goes ok for you.

Hi,
Is it the o-ring seal on the oil feed spigot that you are referring too,you should get a new one with your set, other than that you will get one from a factor or engine rebuild centre.((its not worth refitting the old one))

Cheers.

I called my UK supplier - as it turned out they had opened the head set to remove the valve guide seals [not required for a built head], and must have droppped the little bag containing all the rubber based seals. They are sending a set out today! :D
