Judder on turn off

Hi im a new member and 3 week old Bongo owner ! The car was bought from a dealer in Southampton and we are over the moon with it, cant find any signs of a re spray but its nearly mint and the seats look like they have never been sat on ! However when turning off the engine theres quite a judder ( from front to back ) Ive checked that the exhaust is not loose, seems ok ? could it be an engine mount problem ? or is it the fact that ive never owned a car where you sit on top of the engine ? the car drives great, smooth auto gear change, lovely steering ( very light ) beautiful body work and interior etc !

any help would be great as we have spent all our dosh on this Freda and I cant afford a garage to take a look, Im even doing my own oil change this weekend, believe me thats a major challenge for me !

If you have had it only 2 weeks its under warrenty so talk to the dealer.

having said that is it diesle 2.0 petrol or a v6

do you mean the whole van shakes? if so and it's a diesel that is fairly normal, as you say you are sat on top of a huge lump of torque

Hi thanks for your reply to my post, just to confirm its a 2.5 TD and the judder seems to be from underneath !

i still think its normal but if you put your location there may be another member near you who could take a look, or do a little video and upload to youtube and post the link on here so we can see what you are refering to

i have owned 2 diesel bongos and driven others, they all give the big shake when you turn em off

glad of that....i thought it was just ours! some days seems a little more "harsh" than others.

The diesels do have a tendency to let you know they've shut down but I'd say it more of a Thud than a Judder, maybe something ain't right.


Suggest you either pop back to the vendor or get some local help to check everything is as it should be.

Thanks again for everyones feedback, its put my mind at rest a little, Im still thinking on the lines of possible engine mounts worn, would make sense ? if the engine judders on turn off then all connected to it would do the same. ie exhaust system ?

Just dont want my Bongo to die so young !

Whatever the problem is, its extremely unlikely to be any where near terminal.

Panic not.

It's a niggle, it'll get sorted.

Take it back and get them to replace the engine mounts, if they're ok you shouldnt get much noise when you shut down, could also be a water pipes running along under passenger side that are on a loose rubber mount.

Mine shakes a bit when the engine is shut down, as do most other bongo's i've experienced... Does the dealer have another bongo you can try to see if the symptoms are similar?

I have a more modern diesel car that shuts down smooth as you like, but the bongo shuts down more like a 1980's truck that i used to drive! I think the stop solenoid is a little abrupt on a bongo

Thanks for all your help and comments regarding my judder on turn off , I have just returned from my mates garage, who kindly did an oil & filter change, I am very happy to announce that he thought the van was great, with no major issues ! I still cant beleive its never had a re-spray ( all original paint ) looking forward to some happy motoring !

Take a super super interest in rust prevention (esp. in the difficult to immunise rear wheel arch area, in order to keep it so well into the future. Great motors though aren't they, and so pleased to hear you got a gem. Does it have a low coolant alarm fitted to it, as that's another invaluable investment.

Oh and mine is a diesel and that big old high compression lump sat right next to you certainly does let you know when it's juddering to a halt.

Out of interest Julian, how difficult/costly is that to do and might it make a useful difference to in-cabin smoothness if a 16yr old Bongo (such as a good friend of mine has ) was treated to new ones, do you reckon?
