Help needed, Roof tent

Post by bongomike » Wed Aug 24, 2011 1:12 pm

I wonder if somebody could be so helpful and measure the 2 front straps which are stitched to the top and bottom of the tent, I think they might have been replaced on mine and they are too long, the tent sags quite considerably. I think the next closest Bongo owner to me lives in Sydney (about a 13 hour drive)

thanks in advance [-o<

I wonder if yours has been fitted with a taller replacement from a new shape bongo?
You can't polish a turd - but you can roll it in glitter.

The bongo in the picture is my old one, I have a 98 facelift, I assume these are the same size?, the front straps look far too long, could you message the size of yours?

But the new shape, ie 2000 onwards have roofs that open further than the old shape & facelift, I was just wondering if yours has been replaced at some point with the tent from a newshape which is bigger & therefore would be baggy at full extension.
Not going out to measure mine right now cos it's dark & raining

Sunshine arrived thanks
@58cm of visible strap from the top to the vinyl, then @59cm of vinyl from bottom of strap to the bottom corner, measurements +/- @0.5cm as doing it in the wind with a steel tape from outside on the ground, not capable of balancing up ladders or crawling around in the roof ATM thanks to crap knee after an op.

That's it MF, mine must have a newer tent as mine measure about 83cm thanks ever so much for taking the time to help, it's a bit tough here every time I mention to people here about Bongos they all say what one of those crappy vans (they are taking about the 80's models).

I now have the roof out going to try and work some magic somehow :|

thanks again

If you have a newer tent, the top zip is visible about 8" down from the top - Looks as if it's been extended. On the old ones, the top zip is right up at the roof.

No idea how the mechanism for lifting the roof is different - possibly just moving of the top limit switch, possibly much more, involving longer teleflex cables, different gas struts and lifting levers etc. Perhaps a look at lushprojects to compare part no's will show up the difference.

I'm totally baffled then, the zip is right up the top, I have taken out the whole tent section as we are going to sew a mosquito net on as ours is missing, plus maybe try a couple of mods to make it elevate correctly

Looks like yours is (as I said) an old shape roof with a taller new shape tent for some reason. I reckon your roof is opening to its fullest extent, but the roof tent won't ever be anything but baggy if this is the case.
I reckon it's either a matter of finding somoeone that can alter it, figure out & get the right bits to make the roof open as high as the new shape, or get the right roof tent, if you can't live with it.

Now I'm a bit confused. The visible zip I am on about near the top is part of the mozzie net. If yours is a new-style tent with the mozzie net missing, then you won't have a zip at the top at all.

By "zip is right at the top", do you mean the wee curved ventilation one?

If that's the case, then as Kirsty says you probably have a new style tent, with mozzie net removed, and an older roof.
