ALLOYS AND TYRES

Post by BONGO DAVE » Thu Jan 19, 2012 11:32 am

hI, i would like to put a set of alloys on my 2.5td 4wd 1996 bongo, i understand that all 4 wheels have to have the same circumferance as not to damage the 4wd .
iam thinking of a set of 205x65x16 all round with the same tyres all round would this cause any problems other than the speedo being out a little, which it already is any way, reads 38 when doing 30, thks Dave

Hi Dave,

If you do a search on the forums there is a lot of info on this and varying thought trains and a lot of technical type stuff!

For what it's worth, I've just gone from the standard 15" alloys with different size wheels front and back to a set of 17" with 215/55/17 all round. I read about this in depth on here and took the general consensus that most people with 4WD opt for the same size on all 4 corners. There's a couple of factsheets as well in the members area that explain it.

The spare does become an issue unless you put the right size tyre on (there is a good link on here which will tell you which size you need for a 15" wheel), and then you need to keep a socket etc in the tool kit in case of a puncture.

From what I have gathered, if you increase the size of the wheel the speedo will read the other way (slightly slower than actual speed).

Hope this helps. It took me nearly a week of reading through stuff to make a fairly informed decision.

Do you happen to know what the circumference of the tyres are compared to the originals?

I am wondering what % bigger they are to see what effect it would have on the speedo

Cheers

Dont forget the rating of both the tyre and the wheel matter

Ita a heavy car and wheels made for light sports cars may not be up to the task asked of them
