engine cooling fan constantly on

Post by bongo2go » Sat May 03, 2014 8:22 pm

Hi guys an gals in bongoland, bit of a techie query.
I've just bought my 3rd bongo a 2.5 diesel tintop p reg 4wd and on driving it home from the dealer realised that the electric cooling fan was on.
This at first didn't concern me as the temp gauge was constantly around a 3rd of the way up the gauge.
The first bongo i owned was an absolute delight to own and no problems at all. However the second was a ford freda tintop and not long after buying it the head cracked.
Understandably I was a bit reluctant to buy yet another bongo because of this.
wifey was quite doubeous about going down the bongo route but in the end i won her round. Anyway I digress.
So the current tintop has a fan that comes on as soon as you turn the ignition to the second position .
Now obviously this has the potential to flatten the battery.
I read on the forum that the fan is operated off a switch through the ecu unit.
Now the fan makes no attempt to shut of after a couple of minutes which got me to thinking that maybe the garage had by-passed the sender unit and set it up to come on as soon as you turn the engine on (by now alarm bells are ringing about a dodge to stop the engine over heating).
The garage is a well established one specialising in selling bongos and I have a receipt stating that a new cylinder head has been fitted and cambelt and filters.
Could anybody advise me what the fan should be connected to so that i can check it and or swap it back to how it should be.

Welcome to the forum - where have you been all this time? :). Is it the radiator fans or the scavenger fan in front of the engine? The rad fans will come on automatically when the A/C is on so perhaps that's one possibility. If it's the scavenger fan then check the temperature sensor located under the console by the handbrake.

Hi, thanks for the info.
Iv'e just lifted up the drivers seat and turned the ignition to position 2 (just before actually turning over ) and as per normal a fan came on and stayed on.
I looked at the front of the engine and the fan was not spinning.
It appears to be coming from the passenger side of the engine. at the moment I'm parked up against a fence and won't be able to check under the passenger seat until tomorrow.
But if anybody has any ideas as to which fan it is and more importantly why it is running please let me know.

As Simon said above
It will either be your scavenger fan ( located just in front of engine)
Or your aircon fans at the front near radiator
Turn your heating controls off ( especially if you have climate control . AUTO ) and see what happens then

Thanks for the advice guys.
Right here goes, just decided to get off my bum and move the bongo and check which fan is actually on.
And it turns out that it is the fan behind the radiator right at the front of the bongo under the bonnet.
So the question now is how do I stop it from running all the time.
as I have said the temp gauge stays at a steady 3rd of the gauge which is what I believe to be 11 o clock.
I can't see any obvious signs of tampering with the wiring so if you could tell me which temp sender I am looking for (location ) and possible way to test it would be greatly appreciated.

If your air con is switched off.... then chances are the connector Temp sender on the block is not pushed in.... unplugging defaults to the Engine fans on.... just another thought

There are 2 fans on the radiator which come on either when engine reaches set temperature or when A/C is switched on. The temp sensor for the dashboard gauge is different to the one which controls the fans so it possible to have normal temp readings on the instrument panel, but the fan controller being told the engine needs cooling. May be a faulty sensor or loose connection. Alternatively, someone may have previously fitted a switch to override the automatic control.

The sensor you need to check is about mid way down the block on the drivers side as I recall.

It could be possible that this vehicle has a history of Overheating, I would check out the ECT sensor on the O/S of the engine it may have suffered Melt Down.

My thanks go to all bongonauts that have attempted to answer this problem.
In particular mike and simon.
I had a root around this afternoon looking for the sensor on the block approximately mid way down the block as advised and low and be hold there was a plug dangling down looking all lonely and out of place and just behind this was the said temp sensor.
On refitting the plug and turning the ignition switch the front fan had indeed stopped.
so happy days are indeed here but I will indeed be keeping an eye on the temp gauge for a while just to be on the safe side.
I do have a couple of other issues (see my other postings ) but in fairness it would appear that for the £16 membership it has already proved to be well worth the price of joining.
Here's to many more days of "bongoing"

hi bud

ok - so the fan is now connected to the sensor

lets hope they just forgot to attach it or it just came loose and fell off

last thing you want is the sensor not working and your fan doesn't come on at all

I certainly wouldn't have known to disconnect the sensor to run the fan continuously

just keep an eye on temp

hopefully you've done the investigating and you've sorted

I came to this thread after getting my van back from MOT and engine fan constantly on (when key moved to 2nd position and when engine running).

Followed the comments and found that the sensor cable had come loose on drivers side of engine - not very loose at all, but a gentle push back together solved the problem. Couldn't believe it! So, thanks for posting the answer up here, saved me a trip back to the garage (if they would have known what to do anyway!).
