I have my cylinder head removed and pistons removed.
I am going fit new main and big end shell with the engine/gearbox in situation.
Also a new set of piston rings.
Along with another new cylinder head. This one did not fail due to overheating. Broken rockers etc.
My concern is priming the oil pump.
In days gone by it was customary to put some grease in the pumps.
I would rather not do this on this repair.
I am just concerned that the pump will not pick up the oil immediately.
Was thinking about refitting the bottom end and then manually turn the pump to ascertain if any oil comes up the main block to cyl head gallery pipe.
Like I said has anyone got any experience on this one.
2nd Point....the piston rings are very gummed up. I have been using a high percentage of veg oil without any performance issues.
Has anyone had pistons out on a Bongo that has been running on veg oil.
There really is a high carbon build up behind the rings .

You should not have to grease the pump,( I don't even know where you could do this function) if in doubt fit a new pump,(its the heart of the engine).
If you are worried about initial starting (after rebuild)disconnect the Stop valve wire and crank the engine until the Warning light goes out.
PS the carbon problem could be worn ring grooves or worn cylinders. It could also be the pistons overheating owing to the Oil Cooler jets shutting down due to low pressure.(possibly initially caused by worn main bearings or under performing pump).

Before fiting new rings in a used bore .. I always 'bust the glaze' on the bore walls .. this cross hatching' helps the new rings to bed / wear in more easily ..
Proper tools are available but a 'flap wheel' in a drill does a similar job ..

After much time and grief. My bongo fired up tonight.
Running on four cylinders.
Got a bit of a leak from top hose clamp to deal with.
Only ran for a minute or so.
Will bleed etc tomorrow.
I have put a strong magnets around the oil filler and magnetic sump plug.
Hopefully these will collect any swarf that evaded airline blowouts.
Going to change the oil once the cooling system has been bled and then very 500miles or so for a while.
One thing that was God Send was the digital torque /angle wrench that I purchased recently.
Works wonders on the angle set up on the cylinder head.

Old hard drive are a good source of very strong magnets I use them on my old British motorbike as filtration is non existent.
Are you using cheap oil to bed things in?
Running to high a percentage of veg when cold can cause ring gumming due to incomplete combustion on start up.
I do think your oil change schedule is a bit OTT after the first change but if it gives you peace of mind good luck.

Just managed to get the Bongo running on song for "Rewind " festival at Henley over the weekend. We had sought after camping tickets so getting the Bongo was paramount.
I have run the oil from the first change through some filter paper to see if any metallic residue was in there. Nothing at all, just a small piece of carbon.
All seems in order at this time.
As I previously mentioned used some powerful little magnets attached to the oil filter.
Only time will tell.
