2wd play in prop/diff

Hi,

I took the plunge and got a 96 bongo, i have taken to local garage (who i know well) to check it over and make sure i have limited problems

One of the things he has said is the seems to be play in the prop/diff, he asked me to phone around and see if this is a common issue - i phoned one guy who said it will all need replacing, just wandering if anyone has heard of this issue and what i would be looking at if i wanted to get it fixed? the guy i spoke with said it might be easier to buy the whole axel with everything and put that on - this sounds expensive

Any advice ? i'm based in Twickenham if any one knows anyone local who knows about this type of thing?

If he is referring to play when you rotate the prop backwards and forwards the there will be some play. It shouldnt "clack" as you do it though and the play should not be excessive.
If he is referring to play in the UJ then there should be no play there.

If you drive the vehicle at varying speeds do you hear a whine from the back especially as you take your foot off the throttle.
If Yes then that would indicate some wear in the Diff.
No need to replace the whole axle though the diff can be removed with the axle in place and half shafts pulled and then overhauled.
We use a firm in Kingston for our gearbox/diff work and have done for a good few years now.
A diff rebuild on some thing like that would be around 450.00 if you remove the diff.

May be worth giving them a call and getting them to look it over if you have any doubts.
Alternatively buy a second hand axle, Fleebay or the like, make sure its the right model though as the ratios differ between models.

Just had a look on Bongo Spares site and they have complete axles on there for a couple of hundred quid and they will be able to source the right one for your model too. At that sort of cost I wouldnt bother with a rebuild. They have a good rep on here and I think you get a bit off if you are a BF member.

There should be very little backlash on the diff pinion flange, it would probably be worthwhile having the pinion Nut and washer checked .
