Oil leak?

Post by 2newbies » Tue Sep 20, 2016 7:23 pm

hi all,

crawling under daisy today i noticed that some oil had sprayed up underneath, just in front of the spare wheel. does anyone have any ideas where this could be coming from - could it be from a drive shaft seal?

any ideas much appreciated.

thanks

is it 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, one of them, and not the other has a grease nipple in the universal joint on the prop, this can fling out and look a bit messy.
or it could be the nose seal on the diff, check the oil level, and check that the little thimble breather is clear, these can rust shut, its on the top of the diff, it should turn/spin freely and lift and fall slightly.

this looks like a limited slip mechanism diff. #-o #-o

As a general rule you need to degrease the affected area to help establish the origin. But you will know that, so i'll fetch me coat and be off!

Oil from the usual leak at the upper offside front of the engine and diesel leaking from the fuel pump can easily end up deposited in the area you are talking about. In worse cases it can end up eddying up onto the tailgate.

Providing it doesn't drip onto the road or driveways it can offer a degree of rust protection just where road salt gets a hold.
