Oil seals in rear axle
I have swapped over the diff in the rear axle and had to remove the rear drive shafts to do this. I had a new set of rear axle seals and changed the two on each side that I could find. The rear small 52mm seal, which was inboard of the bearing, and the rear outer 86mm seal. However i had another set of seals in the pack, a pair of 71mm rear inner seals but i could not see where these went so reassembled as i found it. All the expanded diagrams i have seen, including the one by Lush Projects only shows two seals, the small and large. I now have oil leaking into the offside rear hub. I may have just nicked the small seal when i put the drive shaft back but before i order a new one and strip it i would like to understand why i have the extra seal in the pack. If anyone knows can they get in touch. If i have missed something and i needed to fit this seal it may solve the oil leak at the hub.

I changed my leaking seals a few weeks back on the LH side of the rear axle. I received three seals in the kit but only used two with a note in the package saying I could get a refund on the one I didn’t use, which happened to be the 71mm.
Changing the two seals seemed to cure my leak - I’ve clocked up about 800 miles since.

Cheers, any idea what the 71 mm one is for? Looks like i may have caught the inner seal when i re inserted the drive shaft.

The axle uses different size seals according to the make, suppliers usually give you both sizes as they don't know which ones are for your vehicle. Where did you get the seals and was there a surcharge on sale or return.

I got them from Mazda Bongo.com. I can't remember the surcharge but need to get another inner seal. I am sure that must be the answer, the 71 mm seal is for another type of axle. Cheers

Yes that company operates this way, if you send back the unused unopened seal/s they will issue a refund.

SST is the abbreviation Mazda use for Specialised tools

Got the seals from AVA, but I haven't got a 23mm socket for the rear of the brake carrier, doh. 23mm and 21mm (wheel nuts) ordered as my socket set didn't have them and access is limited for a spanner round the back. I dont want to shag the nut, so far the 14mm brake bolts and nuts have come off beatifully, I assume 321 Away (top garage now called Lakeside imports) torqued them properly as they were perfect. Like all jobs, it seemed simple until I started.
Background was a failed MOT due seals leaking onto brake backplate. Garage sucked through their teeth so I drove away. I plan on replacing axle seals and brake pads but not handbrake shoes (they don't look contaminated). Took the breather off and blew through it no problem. I'll do the LSD oil after it gets through the MOT.
When the sockets arrive I'll undo the 23mm top bolt which I assume will allow the half-shaft to slide out. Hopefully then its a simple job to slide seals off then replacements on and carefully reassemble without nicking the seals. The fact that the vehicle is only jacked up on the affected side means I shouldn't loose any diff oil I hope.

Once the handbrake shoes have been removed it reveals the three bolts that hold the triangular plate onto the brake backplate (two 14mm and the top one with two 30mm flats). I'll try to remove these tomorrow but it appears that the handbrake cable mounting on the backplate and the brake line have to be detached too which is a right pain in the arse as it means re-bleeding the brakes afterwards. Is it at all possible to not detach the brake line? I really don't want to have to bleed the brakes? It looks as though the brake line is rigid pipe from where it runs along the axle to the mount on the backplate where it looks to be threaded into a hole on the backplate and then flex runs to the caliper. Please tell me it is a slot not a hole! Can i loosen the nut on the brake line and slide it loose from the mount on the back plate?
