Rear brake discs

Post by sotal » Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:47 pm

Rear brake discs done today not too bad a job.

I couldn't see a great deal of detail on doing the discs (loads about the pads) so a few quick points to note...

Need the entire rear jacked up so that both wheels can spin. Put it in N and chick the front wheels.

14mm socket or spanner required for the bolts.

Pull the rubber bung out of the disc and rotate the wheel so that the inspection hole is at the bottom. Look through the hole with a torch to find the toothed wheel to turn to back the shoes off. Rotate the wheel in the upward direction to release using a flat blade screwdriver.

Then use a M8 bolt in the other hole on the disc to push the disc out from the hub. Then wiggle to remove.

Just hoping I've done ok with adjusting the brakes.

I rotated the adjuster down until the wheel would no longer turn then backed out out.

Handbrake in the correct position but it felt like there was a tiny amount of resistance when rolling. If I back then if another click then the handbrake goes up too far.

Hoping the shoes bed in on the way back to the MOT station!

I replaced my rear Discs, shoes and pads a few months ago. Afterwards I was disappointed with the effectiveness of the handbrake so went through everything again to make sure all was correctly assembled and adjusted. Clearly the new shoes need to bed in to the drums but I checked the contact area which I found to be good. All the parts are good quality Blue Print. I even drove around for a while one night pulling on the handbrake to bed things in. Afterwards I pulled the drums off, cleared out any dust, reassembled the drums and readjusted the shoes, the centre cable and the lever. Still not much better. My van is an auto so I never use the handbrake but I was doing all of this with an MoT looming. Thankfully it was good enough to pass but I still don't think it's any good. It only needs to be 25% efficient for an MoT I believe, but testing facing down on a local hill didn't give me confidence although it works better facing up hill.

I'll not be impressing the local yoof pulling handbrake turns outside KFC

Ours is auto too, but we often park on a steep hill so we do use it. It does seem to hold the car well, so hopefully it will pass ok.

I've done all the other MOT jobs, so will get it back for the retest and see what happens.

Then onto round 2 - A few cosmetic blemishes to remedy. Not really the weather right now though so that might wait a few months.

The other car needs some attention though, so the bongo can go back to being a daily runaround whilst I replace the rear brakes on the Freelander (same sort of system as the bongo so that should be nice!) - calipers, brake discs, pads and shoes to replace on that one. Plus I need to service the Haldex unit in the hope that a service sorts it out, otherwise a rebuild of the Haldex unit. Could also do with changing the glow plugs on the Freelander but it is a long job. They put them behind the egr pipe, inlet manifold, and fuel filter. So all that has to come off first.
