Oily engines?

I just need a few opinions regarding oil coverage of a diesel bongo engine/gearbox.

I have learned that i can expect egr gunk on my engine
but would you say that its normal for a diesel bongo engine to have oil all over it? (60-70%)
i have been told that these engines are very oily engines i am not convinced.

my gearbox has oil all over it , sump is covered in oil, oil is coming out rocker cover
i have an oil covering on the bit of the engine that has the two belts on it at the front of the engine, oil is baiscally evey where below the rocker cover(but not caused by the rocker cover leak as this is not to bad).

how many of you have a engine that has no signs of oil except the EGR gunk?

I think most have the EGR stuff and a leak from the rocker cover, but yours does sound excessive

Probably need to gunk it off then start to identify where it is coming from - then come back to us.

I just wanted to know if i was to expect a certian amount of oil on my engine
and if any one has a engine with no oil on it .

At one stage in its life the oil filler cap could have come off this happened to me and oil was shot all over the engine.

Are you having to top up the steering fluid at all? (under the drivers seat) It's quite common for the pinion seal to go on the steering rack allowing a small amount of leaking which goes a long way in terms of the mess it makes underneath, but this shouldn't be black oil, it should be red dexron III type, but soon looks manky.

only had the van three weeks so i dont even know where the steering fluid would go.
also i did notice fresh, oil coloured liquid that is not oil collecting under drivers door.
think it may be brake fluid as its near somer rubber pipes.

It is quite possibly diesel escaping from the pump seals. It spreads all over the place.

Even saves you having to waxoyl underneath.

Doubt it's brake fluid, if it was you wouldn't be stopping & your brake fluid level under the bonnet would quickly drop & the brake light should warn you it's getting low, could be diesel, gearbox or steering fluid if it's under the drivers side, lift the seat & you'll see the power steering fluid bottle, it's even labelled. Be as well to check the gearbox oil level too, must be warmed up (preferably after a run) & running, handrake on, range slowly through the gears (hold the footbrake down too just in case) & take the level in P, dipstick is to the rear of the space under the drivers seat.
