Mine (95) works only when ignition on. On a VERY hot day, and temp. in engine comp. is high, come back to the car, turn ignition on, and the fan works....drive a short distance, TM2 cools down, and scavenger fan turns off...This cycle only occurs when parked in ambient temperatures of 40 C. +/-

Mines more sensitive to heat and tends to come on sooner than yours Helen. Maybe its cos I'm a bloke

I've only ever heard my scavenger fan come on, when stationary, after a high speed run - it continues after I've left the vehicle, without the key in the ignition Perhaps it only initially activates with the ignition on, but continues afterwards

HA!...I actually get mine to stay on with ignition off when testing with a hairdryer, but there may be more to it...perhaps as G8dhe says...we need to poke around in the ECU...chances are there are a few things involved in setting it off, as we both have different experiences....The thick plottens as Sherlock might say....so, Wat'son this weekend....The case of the Heated Sensor...I have to check mine out anyway....I do so Annually

But here's the thing. I switched off engine on mine and no fans were left on. Returned to vehicle a few mins later and turned ignition on, and scavenger came on. I guess there must have been a heat build up in the 'upturned bowl' after I stopped moving, so sensor was beyond trip threshold and fan fired up when ignition went live. HOWEVER, I wouldn't know if it runs on once it has been tripped while driving. I guess the temps we had were somewhat below the 40 degree Helen gets and certainly I've hardly ever (if ever) been aware of mine activating while driving (and I'd probably know as my over-ride switch light, although not in direct line of sight, comes on when the fan is live and as current backfeeds to it). I was about to say that its quite possible the fan has a timer that tells it to run on even when key is out, but mine didn't do that either despite having been tripped. Weird.

dan you dont say whether you temp gauge is modified or standard,unless ive missed it.

I've got the standard temp gauge. Not had time to play yet as been working, and my weekend off is currently being spent sat in a boat on the lake at Blenheim Palace providing safety cover for the triathlon!

the standard temp gauge does not move unless the system is in trouble,it sits at about 11 oclock position, if you have a problem by the time the gauge shows hot its to late.
the causes could be many,but you need to test the system for leaks,are you loosing water,even just a bit per week/month
