coolant loss/number 1 manifold stud

hi guys,while on holiday started losing a small amount of coolant,alarm going off every 3 days or so.checked all hoses and found no leaks and had no issues with overheating.just had a closer look tonight and after taking heat shield off found this

you can just see a small wet patch where the exhaust manifold meets the head.on further inspection found this.

looks like manifold stud has bit the dust,but would this also be the cause of the coolant loss or is it more serious.any thoughts,cheers tay.

Manifold stud loss will not cause the leak, just a shrill noise when accelerating.

i think it must be leaking from somewhere else,just found a post where it says bubbles can be seen coming from manifold when engine is running,which must be exhaust gasses due to the stud being broken.not had any of the noises usually reported with the stud being broken tho

you don't always get the squealing noise with number 1 stud broke. mine didn't and i was told it looked like it had been broken for some time., when you get it done ask for a skimmed replacement manifold.

If it's not squeeling then I doubt the manifold is warped...Personally I would get the remains of the stud extracted and eithr retapped,helicoiled or if it just "extracts" a new bit of stud put in......Mine was squeeling and I got away with just doing that DIY without removing anything ..I just swung the alternator out of the way....I drilled mine and helicoiled co's it wouldn't extract and it took a couple of houre You need Carbide (could be cobalt) drills

your probably right Haydn, but for me the few extra quid it cost gave me peace of mind knowing it was flat and even.

Tay, check number 8 out as well. Mine looked a funny colour. For the sake of a few extra quid Ady replaced all of mine and replaced the rusty top looking gasket with a newby.

Still o.k. after 3.5 years...and I used a bit sawn off steel bolt as a replacement stud.
Try and use a extractor first after a good soak in penertrating oil and try doing it hot and cold once the extractor is in.

if you drill do a small pilot hole first and keep it centered.

theres a fact sheet on here somewhere with pictures if you need it,it gives all the parts and prices of them.if you put a new stud in make sure its a hot side stud(exhaust) not a softer inlet side one,land rover studs fit!!.
just wish i could find the factsheet thingy linky sorry dont do puters

I'm told that the no1 stud snaps BECAUSE the manifold has started to, or has warped...a case of "something has to give".
