advice buying new cylinder head

Post by fredasurf » Sat Nov 06, 2010 9:23 am

Just wondering if any one knows anything about buying new cylinder heads, ours has got a crack in it and needs replacing.
there are loads on ebay but they range from £200 -£500 in price and all claim to be a 'genuine replacement part'
Any advice- which do I buy? Will it need skimming when it arrives? Why is there such a price difference?
Is it simply more money buys better quality? they all look pretty similar too me

Thanks

This is one of those things where the You Get What You Pay For rule applies.

For £200 you get a basic head, probably a Chinese copy & likely to be for a Ford Ranger.

In the £500 bracket you're paying for a fully built unit from a reputable source complete with camshaft, valves etc, ready to bolt on. (Genuine Mazda heads are priced over £1200!)

You'll also need a gasket & a set of head bolts too.

The cheap ones will invariably cost a lot more in the long run.

The Club Shop does decent ones as does Bongo Bits.

Cheap head gasket sets are a major pain, its worth paying a bit more and knowing that its going to work rather than spend hours fitting only to find its all been a waste of time and you have to replace it anyway!
