Can anyone reccomend a cruise control unit ?

Post by Oldboybob » Sat Nov 06, 2010 7:20 pm

Hi, is there anyone out there who has fitted a cruise control unit to their Bongo? If its possible what unit did you use and how does it perform. I recently saw this item on fleabay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT and would like to have something like this fitted to make long drives a bit more comfortable, I have an auto 4x4 2.5 diesel. Thanks for any advice :D

Thanks John, a lot cheaper than the one I found, do you happen to know around about what these would cost in labour to fit, or are they an easy DIY fit? Thanks again :D

Fairly easy DIY job, but could be a pricey garage job, as it could involve 4-5 hours labour (per the website)

Cheers John, might attempt it myself the only bit that looks daunting to me is the wiring part. Will buy the kit and see if it scares me too much when I open the box!

Installed my own a bit over a year ago, and it's run like clockwork ever since - one of the best Bongo upgrades you can do. This thread describes my install: http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43#p343243 - most of which is relevant, although it's a petrol V6 which does not have the vacuum pipe t-piece spare inlet, apparently pre-existing on the diesel engine, and where you can pick up the vac without cutting into a vac pipe as I had to. A search should here reveal the detail on that, or perhaps one of the diesel "cruisers" will chip in with the info.

At section 8, I referred to my " Possibly temporary control unit location..." - it eventually became permanent, and works fine. I just replaced the original baking foil LED-reflector with the convex mirror taken from a Halfords vari-angle stick-on overtaking mirror - the sort that sits on your existing wing mirror glass. Fixed it with a dollop of epoxy putty (ex Screwfix or B & Q), which also worked fine.

Ditto all of that just driven 90 miles Huntingdon area to Oxford area and I reckon I did 85 miles of it using cruise. I don't even use the foot pedal at all on roundabouts now - just touch the brake to disengage cruise as I approach then click "Resume" at just the right point on the roundabout and accelerate back up to cruising speed again.

The Waeco needs very little technical skill to fit but they are getting harder to find and thus dearer as time goes by.

Do a search on "Cruise Control" using the search function at the top of the page and you'll find a enough information to keep you occupied for a week reading it.

the vacume pipe that Ron mentioned is attached to the winterpack exhaust gubbins, its not needed in this country as it doesnt get cold enough so just unplug it off that and use this pipe.

The winter pack is from bongo's from the north of Japan, not all bongos have them on you will wbe able to tell if yours has it, it will have the 2 batteries linked in paralel under the bonnet, and you will have a switch by the drivers knee with a picture of the engine on it which operates the said exhaust gubbins
