New Head Fitted....how hard are your hoses?

Post by Aunt Trumpet » Fri Apr 08, 2011 1:48 pm

Hi, just fitted a new head and fully bled the system according to the You Tube video...cheers. =D>

As you can imagine before and after each journey at the mo I am checking and double checking everything! Its taken a while to get used to where the temp guage sits as about a year ago I performed the gauge mod to help with the diagnostics of a potential boil up, but soon after I had to remove the thermostat as a last resort as I suspected I had a cracked head. This worked well for a year incidentally until Feb this year when it finally gave up.

I have 2 questions for you experts....

Where should the needle sit on a modded gauge? mine is around 1-2 o'clock under normal load.

And, when I check the hoses after a journey they still seem quite hard (pressurised)...not rock hard but they don't move much when squidged...what are they like on your Bongo's after a run?

Thanks for any help. 8)

8) .....Thankd Haydn...even the hose pressure?

Forgot to mention that they are silicone ones, not the standard rubber. Not sure if it might make a difference..... :?

Yes...the hoses should be hard when hot/underpressure........keep your eyes on the coolant level with those hoses.......specially next winter

Hoses will remain hard for a while after stopping. As you are driving the heat is being taken away by air flowing over the rad and engine, when you stop so does the cooling, also the water temperature will be above boiling whilst under pressure and this adds up to taking a while to cool. Hence firm hoses.

Hi Aunt Trumpet

Mine had a new head 2 years ago and it sits at 1pm most of the time with a mason modded gauge.

As per regarding hoses and their firmness, Mason reading.... midway..12 o'clock and just a gnats whisker over in 22c ambient yesterday...not enough to be 12:15/30...using Tama Thermostat...
