Gearbox Kaput.

Post by mister munkey » Tue Apr 12, 2011 6:47 pm

Coming out of work this evening, took a fairly sharp left corner & there was a bit of a bang from what sounded like the rear end along with a nasty grinding sound - A bit like you'd expect to get from wearing the brake pads down to the metal.

Managed to nurse it the five miles or so home, trying to get some idea of what might be wrong along the way. Symptoms are as follows:

I seem to have lost 1st gear entirely. Sticking it in the L1 setting with the Hold button in & attemting to pull away has no effect at all, might as well be in neutral.

Doing the same in S2, it "hunts" for a couple of seconds then bangs into gear & lurches off, making the loud grindy noise.

With the Hold off, the box seems to have forgotten what its supposed to do next & doesn't appear to want to change up again until it gets over 3000rpm.

I'm pretty certain that this is a rhetorical question but any pointers out there as to whether there might be a simple cure?

I am absolutely gutted.

](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) I simply do not believe it MM. You seem to be cursed with Bongo problems, which you thoroughly don't deserve.

Not much I can say really except I guess 2nd hand autoboxes can be got a a reasonable price and slapped on. It sounds like the original is bust bigstyle, though it will be intersting to see what Alacrity has to say if he reads this post. And if I can help in any way with ferrying etc. etc. I'll be straight over.

Once again my deep commiserations

Red wine in generous quantities is good medicine I find 8)

PS - afterthought - is there any chance it might be the diff that is stuffed, and the autobox is just confused by abnormal resistance to trying to turn it?

The noise does seem to be coming from the rear end on the passenger side . . . . Not where I'd expect gearbox related sounds to emanate from so I guess there is a chance it could be something simpler than it seems. Rear diff was replaced 6 or so months back with a used one from Bell Hill after the UJ packed up . . . . .

Fingers crossed I s'pose.

Silver lining . . . .

At least the weather has improved & I have a 185bhp two wheeled monster to get around on in the meantime.

You've had some really bad luck lately Chris :( ~i reckon most people (including me) would have given up by now.
Anyway, don't want to tempt fate but if it is gearbox then theres these people worth considering & they reckon theres more in stock, probably worth keeping in your watched item's.

Arghhhh....hope it is the diff rather than the box but either way you really don't deserve this. Hope you get sorted. Love to Liz & the grown up sprog.

Sadly it sounds to me like like you have broken the geartrain somewhere in the transmission. I can't answer why the noise seems to be coming from the passenger side, it would of course be behind you anyway. If it were the diff - & I'd like to say it was - you would still have all your gears, the fact you have lost 1st (neutrals) would indicate broken geartrain to me I'm afraid.

Sorry.
