Wiring up new towbar - is there a stub harness somewhere?

Post by progroup » Tue Jul 05, 2011 3:21 pm

Hi folks; here I am again with another problem unsolved.
I have the electrical manual CDROM and Service Manual; additional diagrams from LushPorducts.com; and some searching on posts throughout Bongo Fury, but still confused? :?

Removed BOTH rear cluster assemblies and no stub harness. Ideas?

I don't think there is. What age/model is your Bongo?

My 1997 2.5TD AFT 4x4 had a towbar fitted on import and it's been all done by adding additional cables to the individual wires to each light as required.

No stub harness but bongo's are easy when it comes to towbar wiring.

Towbar Function Bongo

Yellow - Nearside (left) indicator green-black
Green - Offside (right) indicator green-white
Black/Brown- Lights red-black
Red - brakes green-yellow
White - ground black
Blue - fog depends on your fitter

All wiring found behind rear light clusters, inside vehicle to ensure waterproofing

Do you suggest pulling each inner side panel and removing rear seat belts to gain access? Or do I connect via the rear clusters? In the later case I would breach the rubber gromet.

pull off the light and pull out the grommet, you have a few inches to play with that you can expose.

I agree, however to meet with thatcham specs a towbar should be fitted with scotchblocks! what the vehicle security board have to do with towbars is beyond me!! apart from having to pay them an extra few hundred quid a year to be a listed qualified towbar fitter,if there is such a thing lol

Agreed with the scotchlocks.... Unreliable continuity with the Bongo wires...

You could create yer own soldered in stub harness??

Using a Mate & lock connector like this sort of thing.. Bullet or spade, any size!

Created my own loom for the dials in the dash..

(Dial on the left gutted for a series of warning led's.)

Used an 8 way when i replaced the window switch with a 626 switch too...
I got a 4 way behind the rheostat fader as well when i gutted it to accommodate the dials.. (The one over the wiper stalk)
Cheaper by comparison to a race horse...

Thanks guys; we too solder the connections! The scotchlocks you speak off often don't work after a while; especially if crimping too much and severing the wire. I have found that many times during troubleshooting fresh connections.

Anyway, back to my original posted question, I think it has been answered in that NO Mazda trailer towing hardness has/was provisioned on the Bongo series.
I have wired up a few cars/trucks in the past. Getting them to work is easy enough, but where to tag on was my concern.

Cheers,

Like Julian said, there is a fair amount of "slack" in the loom behind the panel...

.. Though i haven't been there for towing electrics, i have installed an axillary reverse light. :D

Yes, a fairly easy setup afterall!
I ended up removing both clusters, running TWO wire sets down through each side panel, drilled a 1/2" hole downward through the body after removing the plastic trim carpet cover. This aligned with another factory hole underneath. I shrouded the new wires with loom and tested each of the FOUR wires as LH/RH indicators, tail light, and brake light.

If I had more time and inclination, I would create my own stub harness.

Thanks to all above for your gracious input on this post.
Cheers,

Thanks Jaylee!
Today was the first time out with BongoBonnie towing our tent trailer AND later our tent trailer mounted on top of another ATV trailer with high capacity, like piggy-back style. We need 8 seats, all the gear, firewood, and the tent trailer on ONE trailer!

So, today was impressive that the Bongo diesel can pull with ease nearly 3,600lb behind and a full people load too!

Dare to be different, eh? 8)
