Cambelt Change on a V6

Post by bongomike » Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:00 am

Hello, has anyone done a cambelt change on a V6 how long would it take a garage to change as nobody has seen a Bongo in Sunny Queensland. Are there easy to follow guidelines on the forum???

thanks

Hi,

A few bits need to come out to get at the cambelt, plus I'm pretty sure the coolant too (don't quote me on that).

5 hours seems a tad long mind.

Get them to check your camshaft oil seals (4 of them) and the crankshaft oil seal as these are known to go hard after a while and seep oil. Only around £10 each so worth considering whilst it's apart.

I also got the thermostat, and belts changed on mine when it was apart, okay it put the cost up but not something you need to do that often.

Good luck. Discount trucks did mine and are well experienced with the V6.

I changed my own cam belt  i made my own clamps to lock the cams off and locked the fly wheel off with another homemade tool :D its called improvisation  its no different from changing any other cam belt really just bigger and trickier to time up gotta take more off including the dropping the coolant as the bypass pipe needs to come off, dizzy comes off waterpump pully needs to come off, both auxillary tensioners and belts need to come off, dipstick needs to come off, all the cambelt covers etc. Its not for the faint hearted but possible DIY fasion if your handyish with a set of spanners, the manual is a must tho, I also took the scav fan out to get the bottom end timed up easier and moved the power steering resovior to get the belt tight up the driver side. I will add all my timing was to c#ck cause my hydraulic tensioner was goosed and the belt jumped a tooth on the driver side exhaust and 2 teeth on the driver side inlet  i also had a big rip in the belt, i had a very lucky escape to be honest and i'm glad the engine started to make a strange noise where i think the flap of belt that was hanging off was hiting the bottom of the crank  much longer and i fear my engine would have been dead.

My van is affectionately known as the pheonix in my house now

Just checked the invoice from when I had my cambelt changed and the total time was 6 1/4 hours, which included fitting a coolant alarm and new front brake pads.

Not Really just a tight arsed mutha :D Had no choice and nothing to loose it was in my garage on blocks for 9 months when i found the rip in the belt there was no starting it so i couldn't drive it to a garage plus i was skint so i thought stuff it the only tool i had to buy was a universal pulley holder to get a proper grip on the crank pulley, which is fine cos it will get used again #-o

good luch
