Excess engine oil

Post by hopey » Sun Aug 26, 2012 3:30 pm

Hi, I'm a complete novice when it comes to engines etc, I've had my Bongo for 4 months and finally looked at the engine to check the oil.,I found a fair bit of oil on the engine (only on the passenger side), is this something to worry about? It looks like it's coming from the engine?

Not uncommon, they can be quite oily engines. It's probably leaking from the rocker cover (for as much as I can tell from the pic, on my small phone). I gunked mine clean and tightened the bolts just a little in the area it seemed to be coming from. No problems since.

it looks like the rocker cover gasket.
wants doin :( .
the bolts go through a spacer tube through the gasket, this hardens over time.
the fury shop sells a good replacement with new tubes/gasket, or you can cheat----grind a few mm off the old tubes and refit.

Cheers for the replies.

Is it a big problem and is it something that I need to get sorted asap?
It's still ok to drive?

Shouldn't be. I go to Adrian at Japan Direct in Bury 0161 763 3003. He is excellent with Bongos, good on price, and may get a gasket (if it needs one) cheaper than the Bongo Shop. And you can enjoy Bury Market while he does the job.

may need to check out jaylees ac compressor question thread too, as yours has a bolt through on the alternator adjuster.

Be careful then, you don't want to over tighten the bolts and crack the rocker cover. Just a gentle tighten. . If in doubt, contact Adrian

in the picture you posted of your bongo engine i notice that your alternator belt adjuster is missing, it has been replaced by a nut and bolt.
